95% Moneyball

All Critics (173) | Top Critics (39) | Fresh (163) | Rotten (9)

One of the most soulful of baseball movies -- it confronts the anguish of a very tough game.

The real protagonist of Moneyball, however, is Beane himself, played with great charisma by Brad Pitt.

[Pitt] provides ballast and a swaggering humor to a movie that, too often, strives to be The Social Network of baseball movies.

Pitt, who has a producing credit, is not the sole reason this tremendous -- yet intimate -- sports tale soars over the fences. The bench is deep. And the script has a powerful but finessed swing.

Moneyball turns an unlikely subject interesting, making a professional sport the nexus where past and future collide.

Moneyball is exactly like moneyball -- infused with intelligence, amusing in its attacks on false gods, but way easier to admire than to love.

More closely resembles The Social Network than it does can-of-corn horsehide epics like Field of Dreams or The Natural.

I kept hoping for something about the film to surprise me. Very little did.

Brad Pitt is having a really good year.

Like a businessman settling into his recliner after a hard day's work, Brad Pitt has slid into middle age with an ease that's both pleasurable and enviable to watch.

...isn't really a baseball movie, or even a sports movie - it feels more like a smart procedural from the '70s.

One of the most fascinating star turns of the year.

unfolds smoothly as the kind of baseball movie that even those who couldn't care less about baseball will find engrossing

Moneyball is easy to admire, a bit more difficult to love. That's because the film, like its central character (well played by Brad Pitt), keeps its emotions in check so much of the time.

Tasteful, entertaining, but not entirely satisfying. 'How can you not be romantic about baseball?' Beane asks, twice. A more relevant question might be: How can you be romantic about sabermetrics?

Recognizes that sometimes, happily-ever-afters are more complicated than uplifting Hollywood films can manage.

Pitt is mesmerizing --- he's high-strung and laid-back all at once. It's an Oscar-worthy performance.

Don't be surprised when Brad Pitt's name is announced in the Best Actor category.

It is not easy to make a film about quiet courage and unassuming heroes like these, but this film rises to that challenge and hits one right out of the park.

Brad Pitt may be the big draw but it is Jonah Hill's performance that gives the film its flavor. And when they are both on screen the movie is at its best.

Immediately one of my favorite baseball films, as well as one of my favorite Pitt performances. Only time will tell if I can delete 'one of' from those sentences.

Moneyball is an impelling triple. It's smart, agile, and effective. But it's anti-climactic. Director Bennett Miller and writers Sorkin and Zaillian could swing for a home run, but instead they settle for a base on balls.

A tender reminder that the heart sometimes still matters even if we now live in a technology-driven, Digital Age where machines lead and humans follow.

It's the movie baseball hot stove and transaction junkies have been waiting for their entire lives.

Protests against Wall Street spread across US (AP)

NEW YORK ? Protests against Wall Street entered their 18th day Tuesday as demonstrators across the country show their anger over the wobbly economy and what they see as corporate greed by marching on Federal Reserve banks and camping out in parks from Los Angeles to Portland, Maine.

Demonstrations are expected to continue throughout the week as more groups hold organizational meetings and air their concerns on websites and through streaming video.

In Manhattan on Monday, hundreds of protesters dressed as corporate zombies in white face paint lurched past the New York Stock Exchange clutching fistfuls of fake money. In Chicago, demonstrators pounded drums in the city's financial district. Others pitched tents or waved protest signs at passing cars in Boston, St. Louis, Kansas City, Mo., and Los Angeles.

A slice of America's discontented, from college students worried about their job prospects to middle-age workers who have been recently laid off, were galvanized after the arrests of 700 protesters on the Brooklyn Bridge over the weekend.

Some protesters likened themselves to the tea party movement ? but with a liberal bent ? or to the Arab Spring demonstrators who brought down their rulers in the Middle East.

"We feel the power in Washington has actually been compromised by Wall Street," said Jason Counts, a computer systems analyst and one of about three dozen protesters in St. Louis. "We want a voice, and our voice has slowly been degraded over time."

The Occupy Wall Street protests started on Sept. 17 with a few dozen demonstrators who tried to pitch tents in front of the New York Stock Exchange. Since then, hundreds have set up camp in a park nearby and have become increasingly organized, lining up medical aid and legal help and printing their own newspaper, the Occupied Wall Street Journal.

About 100 demonstrators were arrested on Sept. 24 and some were pepper-sprayed. On Saturday police arrested 700 on charges of disorderly conduct and blocking a public street as they tried to march over the Brooklyn Bridge. Police said they took five more protesters into custody on Monday, though it was unclear whether they had been charged with any crime.

"At this point, we don't anticipate wider unrest," said Tim Flannelly, an FBI spokesman in New York, "but should it occur the city, including the NYPD and the FBI, will deploy any and all resources necessary to control any developments."

Flannelly said he does not expect the New York protests to develop into the often-violent demonstrations that have rocked cities in the United Kingdom since the summer. But he said the FBI is "monitoring the situation and will respond accordingly."

Wiljago Cook, of Oakland, Calif., who joined the New York protest on the first day, said she was shocked by the arrests.

"Exposing police brutality wasn't even really on my agenda, but my eyes have been opened," she said. She vowed to stay in New York "as long as it seems useful."

City bus drivers sued the New York Police Department on Monday for commandeering their buses and making them drive to the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday to pick up detained protesters.

"We're down with these protesters. We support the notion that rich folk are not paying their fair share," said Transport Workers Union President John Samuelsen. "Our bus operators are not going to be pressed into service to arrest protesters anywhere."

The city's Law Department said the NYPD's actions were proper.

On Monday, the zombies stayed on the sidewalks as they wound through Manhattan's financial district chanting, "How to fix the deficit: End the war, tax the rich!" They lurched along with their arms in front of them. Some yelled, "I smell money!"

Reaction was mixed from passers-by.

Roland Klingman, who works in the financial industry and was wearing a suit as he walked through a raucous crowd of protesters, said he could sympathize with the anti-Wall Street message.

"I don't think it's directed personally at everyone who works down here," Klingman said. "If they believe everyone down here contributes to policy decisions, it's a serious misunderstanding."

Another man in a suit yelled at the protesters, "Go back to work!" He declined to be interviewed.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a billionaire who made his fortune as a corporate executive, has said the demonstrators are making a mistake by targeting Wall Street.

"The protesters are protesting against people who make $40- or $50,000 a year and are struggling to make ends meet. That's the bottom line. Those are the people who work on Wall Street or in the finance sector," Bloomberg said in a radio interview Friday.

Some protesters planned to travel to other cities to organize similar events.

John Hildebrand, a protester in New York from Norman, Okla., hoped to mount a protest there after returning home Tuesday. Julie Levine, a protester in Los Angeles, planned to go to Washington on Thursday.

Websites and Facebook pages with names like Occupy Boston and Occupy Philadelphia have also sprung up to plan the demonstrations.

Hundreds of demonstrators marched from a tent city on a grassy plot in downtown Boston to the Statehouse to call for an end of corporate influence of government.

"Our beautiful system of American checks and balances has been thoroughly trashed by the influence of banks and big finance that have made it impossible for the people to speak," said protester Marisa Engerstrom, of Somerville, Mass., a Harvard doctoral student.

The Boston demonstrators decorated their tents with hand-written signs reading, "Fight the rich, not their wars" and "Human need, not corporate greed."

Some stood on the sidewalk holding up signs, engaging in debate with passers-by and waving at honking cars. One man yelled "Go home!" from his truck. Another man made an obscene gesture.

Patrick Putnam, a 27-year-old chef from Framingham, Mass., said he's standing up for the 99 percent of Americans who have no say in what happens in government.

"We don't have voices, we don't have lobbyists, so we've been pretty much neglected by Washington," he said.

In Chicago, protesters beat drums on the corner near the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. In Los Angeles, demonstrators hoping to get TV coverage gathered in front of the courthouse where Michael Jackson's doctor is on trial on manslaughter charges.

Protesters in St. Louis stood on a street corner a few blocks from the shimmering Gateway Arch, carrying signs that read, "How Did The Cat Get So Fat?," "You're a Pawn in Their Game" and "We Want The Sacks Of Gold Goldman Sachs Stole From Us."

"Money talks, and it seems like money has all the power," said Apollonia Childs. "I don't want to see any homeless people on the streets, and I don't want to see a veteran or elderly people struggle. We all should have our fair share. We all vote, pay taxes. Tax the rich."

Enlighten Your Home With Solar Panel System - Technology of ...

What is a solar panel system? It is a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity. Energy from the sun is transformed into the elective energy which can be used for your home or small office.

Installing solar panels at home or office is an excellent way to conserve energy and cut the costs of your electricity bills. It is also a benefit by producing clean and safe energy. It is true that lots of people have become open-minded to the use of a non-conservative source of energy i.e. solar energy. Solar panel systems also assist with in the general health related issues of people. It?s clean energy. So much of today?s current way of power generation causes lots of air and water pollution.

If you are looking for installing solar panel system at your home, it definitely needs little planning and knowledge about installation. Prior to installation, calculate energy consumption. Take all factors into consideration like size of the home and daily use of power consumption etc.

Depending on how much energy you consume on an average, you can decide which kind of solar panel system is better suited for you. There are two types of solar panel systems. The are categorized depending on how it is installed. One is roof mounting, while another one is ground mounted. If your energy consumption is about average, then it is advisable to go for a roof mounted one. However, if you have bigger property, then ground mounted may be best suitable to meet power needs of your family.

Ground mounted solar panel systems are simpler to build than that of the roof mounting one. Single solar consists of near around 20 panels. It is possible to connect two racks on the mounting. There is further classification in this kind of solar panel system. One is grid power where as another one is grid off. This classification is based on use of solar panel system. Mostly grid off solar panel system is used in the remote place where electricity generation is little tedious. You can make use of any of the two types of solar panel system as Standby Generators.

Standby generators are an automatically operated back up generation system. Sensors and the power switch turn on after a power loss generating a command to the generator. Your entire electrical power load is transferred to the Standby Generator. When the main power resumes, again this transformation takes place and it is switched back to main. To run Standby Generators, it is highly recommended to make use of non conventional source of energy like solar energy. This will ensure that the main power supply is not overloaded and you may save lots of money with it.

The internet is the biggest source to get information on solar panel systems. On internet, you can search through the different online portals. You can come across a variety of solar panel systems. Select one which fits all your requirements and that is within your budgetary limits.

Gunman at large after deadly Calif quarry shooting (AP)

CUPERTINO, Calif. ? The search for a disgruntled employee accused of killing three co-workers and injuring six others at a Northern California limestone quarry brought SWAT teams in armored vehicles to the normally quiet streets of Silicon Valley on Wednesday.

The hunt for Shareef Allman of San Jose began after authorities said he opened fire at a routine safety meeting at Permanente Quarry around 4:15 a.m. and later wounded a woman in a failed carjacking.

Schools were closed or on lockdown in Cupertino, home of Apple Inc., and in neighboring communities as authorities went door to door with guns drawn and residents were warned to stay indoors.

Meanwhile, friends and neighbors expressed disbelief and sadness at the possibility the man they knew as an outgoing, engaged member of the community could have committed such horrific acts of violence.

Allman became upset and left the meeting then returned with a handgun and rifle and started shooting people, Santa Clara County sheriff's Lt. Rick Sung said. About 15 workers were at the meeting during the shooting, which authorities said lasted about two minutes.

Sheriff Laurie Smith said two people were pronounced dead at Permanente Quarry in the foothills outside Cupertino, and a third person died later at a hospital.

Six others at the quarry were wounded and taken to hospitals, where some remained in critical condition, Smith said.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Relatives of victims and other employees rushed to the quarry to check on their loved ones. One woman, who asked to remain anonymous because the gunman was still at large, said her father worked at the quarry for about 10 years and was the lead employee on the night shift.

She said he called his family around 4:30 a.m. to say something was happening and not to pick him up. He called again just after 6 a.m. to say he was OK but was hiding.

He called a third time to say he was coming out of hiding.

Later in the day, authorities located Allman's vehicle and seized a shotgun, a handgun and two rifles believed to belong to the suspect, Smith said, adding that some of the weapons were found in the car.

"The challenges are the big geographical area," she said of the manhunt. "The challenges are that he's armed."

Around 7 a.m., authorities received a 911 call that a woman was shot in an attempted carjacking near Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Cupertino campus by a man matching Allman's description. The shooter fled on foot after using a weapon similar to a gun used in the quarry shooting, authorities said.

The carjacking victim, a Hewlett-Packard contract employee, was in fair condition at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, according to hospital spokeswoman Joy Alexiou. Another victim was treated and released from the hospital, while a third remained in fair condition, she said.

Allman was last seen in surveillance footage from a nearby gas station shortly after the shooting outside Hewlett-Packard, Smith said. In the video, he appeared to be armed, she said.

The shootings rattled those who know Allman.

"He's always had a smile on his face," said Paulette Conner, 57, a neighbor at Allman's San Jose apartment complex who said she's known him for five years. "I've never known him to have any violent tendencies. Never. Ever."

Conner said Allman occasionally griped to her and others over the years about his job, including his various shift changes and some co-workers.

Allman is known as a local fixture long involved in San Jose's black community. Before a news conference where community leaders urged him to turn himself in, friends described Allman as a non-violent person not known to own guns.

"He used to do so much for the community. Something must have happened to make him flip out like this," said Pastor Oscar Dace of Bible Way Christian Center. "Everybody just can't believe that this has happened."

Police said Allman is 47, though California voter registration records put his age at 49.

In addition to working at the quarry, Allman once ran a nonprofit group for youths, wrote a novel titled "Amazing Grace" that sought to empower women against domestic violence, and produced and hosted a public access television show for CreaTV in San Jose.

Suzanne St. John-Crane, executive director of CreaTV, said she had spoken with him numerous times but did not know him well.

"Based on what we know now, we're shocked and devastated and feel for the families of the victims," St. John-Crane told The Associated Press. "But he didn't work here. I want to make that clear. We're very frightened."

A video posted on YouTube shows Allman interviewing the Rev. Jesse Jackson outside a memorial for the late musician Walter Hawkins for a piece for CreaTV. In the video, Allman talks with Jackson about the positive and transformative messages of gospel music

"I hope what he gave all of us we take out to our community and use it to better ourselves and our community," Allman said about Hawkins during the interview.

Business records show that in 2004, Allman started a youth development organization called Helping Hands Changing Hearts, which listed its location as Allman's home address. However, the IRS automatically revoked the organization's exempt status as a nonprofit for failure to file proper tax forms for three consecutive years, records showed.

The Permanente Quarry is a limestone and aggregate mining operation and cement plant owned by Lehigh Southwest Cement.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families," Dan Harrington, president and chief executive of parent company Lehigh Hanson Inc., said in a statement. "I have committed the company's resources to assist our affected employees during this difficult time."

The quarry was issued its first permit in May 1939, according to Santa Clara County documents.

The site has been subject to a number of environmental violations over the years, and has been subject to noise and other complaints from nearby residents.

Lehigh makes about 1.2 million tons of cement a year, and its products are involved in a number of major construction projects including the seismic upgrades off the Golden Gate Bridge.

Leslie Feist counts down to heartache in "Metals" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? If you loved Feist's breakout hit of a few years back, the jaunty "1234," then you'll love -- or hate -- her new album, "Metals," which is basically an extended countdown to heartache.

Let's just say that if any of this downcast music gets licensed by an ad agency, it'll be for Abilify, not Apple.

But lest you get scared off prematurely, also be aware that "Metals" is probably the most gorgeous album you'll hear in 2011.

More than on any of the Canadian singer/songwriter's previous three albums, Leslie Feist has alchemized her chamber pop into something so pretty, it hurts.

She doesn't ladle the melancholia on so thick that the emotionally neutral among us won't be able to appreciate its charms.

But if you haven't recently been through a split, you might want to instigate one, just to establish the right clinical conditions to appreciate a breakup album this beauteous.

You'll know whether it's for you from the opening song, "The Bad in Each Other."

A heavy percussive stomp leads to a tough, Lindsey Buckingham-in-the-Appalachians guitar line as Feist sings about how she and her star-crossed lover "had the same feelings at opposite times."

Soothing brass and strings settle in to salve the soul as Feist sings about how "a good man and a good woman bring out the worst in the other."

Bitterness usually makes for better music than a lack of acrimony, but there's something tough, not wimpy, about Feist's fatalistic fair-mindedness.

If that opener was haunting, the word applies doubly to the second track, "Graveyard," which has Feist taking a brief break from nursing romantic wounds to take up matters of mortality.

"Bring 'em all back to life!," she and a group of women sing, almost as a spirited mantra, sounding like a children's chorus making demands on God on behalf of all their dearly departed elders.

It's a more impressionistic then overtly confessional collection of songs.

The gossamer "Caught a Long Wind" is a showcase for the jazz-like dexterity of Feist's delicate soprano, with the sparest piano and strings underscoring the sense of post-flight disappointment as she laments, "I got to know the sky, but it didn't know me."

The single "How Come You Never Go There," while still lulling, has a bit more swing, and considerably more jagged guitar edges. "You're an instrumental tune," she tells her incommunicative lover -- and coming from such a gifted vocalist, that's quite a jab.

Then again, if "Metals" were an all-instrumental album, it'd still be pretty marvelous.

The tracks were recorded live inside a house on the Northern California coast (you can look at the videos on her website for plenty of indoor and outdoor footage).

But the first reaction to the hard-to-pinpoint reverb may be to imagine the sessions were recorded inside a small church, a la Cowboy Junkies' sonically revelatory "Trinity Sessions."

Apple expected to unveil new iPhone Tuesday

(AP Photo/Richard Drew)

(AP) ? Apple fans are amped. The computer and gadget maker is expected to announce a new, more powerful version of its wildly popular smartphone this week ? more than a year after it unveiled the iPhone 4.

Last week, Apple Inc. e-mailed invitations to a media event at its headquarters in Cupertino on Tuesday morning. The invite says "let's talk iPhone," implying the normally secretive company intends to show off the latest version of the device. In the past, Apple has typically introduced a new iPhone during the summer, but this year it was expected to hold off until the fall.

It has been 15 months since Apple began selling the iPhone 4 last June. The first iPhone was revealed in 2007, and the phone's signature slick looks, high-resolution screen and intuitive software made it incredibly popular from the start (the rollout of Apple's iTunes App Store in 2008 helped, too). In addition to gaining millions of fans over the years ? 39 million iPhones were sold just between January and the end of June ? the iPhone and its large App Store have sparked fierce competition from smartphone makers such as those using Google Inc.'s Android software, which was first rolled out in 2008.

Beyond the iPhone itself, the Tuesday event is anticipated as Apple's first major product unveiling in years that won't be led by Steve Jobs, who resigned from the CEO post in August after being out on indefinite medical leave since January. The Apple co-founder is now its executive chairman. And though Jobs did emerge from medical leave twice this year to present Apple's innovations ? most recently in June to show off its new mobile software and iCloud content storage service ? his successor, Tim Cook, is expected to take the lead this time.

Though not nearly as recognizable as Jobs, Cook, formerly Apple's chief operating officer, has been running Apple since January. For years, he has been in charge of Apple's day-to-day operations, and he has long been seen as the natural successor. He also served as Apple's leader for two months in 2004 while Jobs battled cancer and again for five-and-a-half months in 2009 when Jobs received a liver transplant.

Perhaps more important to Apple fans than who is presenting is what the company will reveal on Tuesday. A new iPhone is expected to have a number of changes, the biggest of which will likely be under the hood: the inclusion of Apple's latest iOS mobile software, iOS 5, which has been slated for release this fall.

IOS 5 will include things such as wireless device setup and content syncing, and beefed-up camera, email and Web-browsing apps. A new service called iMessage will allow iOS 5 users to send text messages to each other over Wi-Fi or wireless carriers' data networks, while a folder called Newsstand will corral newspaper and magazine app subscriptions in one place to make it easier to find them. When it comes out, the software will also be available for Apple's iPad, iPhone 4 and 3GS and the two most recent generations of the iPod Touch.

A new iPhone is also expected to include Apple's forthcoming iCloud service, which will store content such as music, documents, apps and photos on Apple's servers and let you access them wirelessly on numerous devices.

As for hardware, a new iPhone isn't expected to look that much different from the iPhone 4, though it could be thinner and have a bigger screen. The existing iPhone is 0.37 inches thick and has a display measuring 3.5 inches at the diagonal.

An improved rear camera is anticipated, too. The existing iPhone has a 5-megapixel camera on its rear. A number of recently released smartphones have moved to 8-megapixel cameras.

One of the most notable hardware changes many industry watchers are predicting is the inclusion of a more powerful chip: Apple's dual-core A5 processor, which is the same chip it uses in its current iPad. The iPhone 4 runs on Apple's older A4 chip, and the move to a more capable chip should improve things such as multitasking, opening apps and gaming.

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said a more powerful chip would be key for getting a feature like voice recognition on the iPhone, which is common on phones running Google Android software. Longtime Apple analyst Tim Bajarin said he wouldn't be surprised to see voice recognition either.

Despite speculation that Apple may show more than one new iPhone on Tuesday, Wu is skeptical. He thinks that in addition to a single new iPhone the company is likely to start selling a version of the existing iPhone 4 with less memory for $99. That would be $100 less than what you'd currently pay to get the cheapest iPhone 4 from one of its two U.S. wireless carriers, AT&T or Verizon Wireless, with a two-year contract.

Analysts also believe Apple could also use the event to trot out new iPods and updates to its iTunes music software, which it usually does in the fall anyway. Last September, Apple announced updates to iTunes and a line of revamped iPods, which included a version of the iPod Nano with a touch screen.

As for when a new iPhone would be available, Wu suspects it would be fairly soon after it is announced. His research indicates production plans Apple set with its suppliers in Asia called for manufacturing to start in October, so he would expect it to be available within a couple weeks of its announcement.

"We would be very surprised if it's longer than that," he said.

And as in the past, consumers are likely to clamor for it. Bajarin believes Apple could sell more than 25 million iPhones total during the holiday quarter, which would be well above the 16.2 million it sold during the holidays last year.

"There's huge pent-up demand for this," Bajarin said.

Apple shares, which have traded between $277.77 and $422.86 in the past year, fell $6.72, or 1.8 percent, on Monday to close at $374.60.

(AP) ? Rare 13th-century frescoes are to be returned to Cyprus from an American museum where they have been exhibited for the last 28 years, the leader of the divided island's Orthodox Christian church said Friday.

Archbishop Chrysostomos II says the Houston-based Menil Collection agreed to return the Byzantine frescoes early next year on the church's insistence not "to allow them to remain there even for one second longer."

"I salute this decision by the Menil Collection because embarking on a court battle would honor neither us nor the Collection," said the Archbishop.

Antiquities smugglers looted the frescoes from the Ayios Themomianos church in northern Cyprus following a 1974 Turkish invasion that split the island into a Turkish-speaking north and a Greek-speaking south.

Menil Collection founder Dominique de Menil obtained the frescoes in 1983, and struck an agreement with the Cyprus church to keep and exhibit them in a purpose-built chapel in Houston.

A decade later, the Cyprus church granted the museum a loan extension until Feb. 2012 in recognition of its efforts to reassemble and restore the fragmented frescoes.

But Chrysostomos said that he has turned down additional requests to keep the frescoes longer, offering instead to dispatch an iconographer to recreate them on the chapel's dome and apses, along with a gift of ten late-19th and early-20th century icons.

The frescoes depict Christ Pantocrator surrounded by a frieze of angels, as well as the Preparation of the Throne attended by Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist.

Another section depicts the Virgin flanked by Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Cyprus Antiquities Department Director Maria Hadjicosti said officials will oversee the entire operation to transport the frescoes back to the island.

The church says scores of religious artifacts, including icons and mosaics, were looted from Greek Cypriot churches in the island's north.

Many have since appeared on the international art market. Chrysostomos said "millions" have been spent purchasing them with the purpose of repatriating them. The church's biggest success was the recovery of several priceless 6th century mosaics.

"We'll rest only when all our antiquities, all our ecclesiastical objects return to where they belong," he said.

Christianity in Cyprus stretches to the faith's earliest years. The Apostle Paul is said to have preached the gospel in Cyprus in A.D. 45 and converted the island's Roman governor Sergius Paulus ? the first Roman official to undergo conversion.
