Wyclef Jean's Charity, Yele Haiti, Accused Of Squandering Millions In Donations

Wyclef Jean's charity, Yele Haiti, is coming under scrutiny again for squandering millions of dollars in charitable donations.

The New York Post reported that the charity took in $16 million from donors in 2010, but only about a third went to fund emergency efforts. The paper also reported that $1 million went to a Florida company called Amisphere Farm Labor, Inc., that doesn't appear to actually exist. The paper said the address listed for Amisphere is an auto body shop in Miami. The paper also said that Amsterly Pierre, the man who is purportedly Amisphere's owner, bought three properties in Florida, including a waterfront condo in an upscale area.

?The Post conveniently fails to acknowledge that the decisions that Yele made were a response to one of the world?s most catastrophic natural disasters in modern history and required an immediate humanitarian response,? Jean said in a statement. ?We made decisions that enabled us to provide emergency assistance in the midst of chaos and we stand by those decisions.?

Jean also noted that he was no longer part of Yele's active leadership. ?I have acknowledged that Yele has made mistakes in the past, including being late in IRS filings, but that is old news. When I entered politics last summer, I transitioned from being a board member and chairman of Yele Haiti to a supporter. The new and good news is that Yele under new leadership, despite efforts to undermine its credibility and effectiveness, continues its mission to serve people in need.?

Last year, the ex-Fugees rapper mounted an unsuccessful campaign for Haiti's presidency. That electoral bid was dogged by allegations that Jean took money from Yele for his personal use, which he flatly denied. "Have we made mistakes before? Yes," Jean said in a press conference last year. "Did I ever use Yele money for personal benefits? Absolutely not. Yele's books are open and transparent."

Bernie Fine Scandal: Third Person Accuses Syracuse Assistant Basketball Coach Of Child Molestation

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A third accuser has come forward in the investigation of child molestation allegations against an assistant basketball coach at Syracuse University.

Zach Tomaselli, 23, of Lewiston, Maine, said Sunday that he told police that associate head coach Bernie Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room. He said Fine touched him "multiple" times in that one incident.

The Post-Standard in Syracuse first reported his accusations earlier Sunday.

Tomaselli, who faces sexual assault charges in Maine involving a 14-year-old boy, said during a telephone interview with The Associated Press that he signed an affidavit accusing Fine following a meeting with Syracuse police last week in Albany.

Syracuse police declined comment. A phone call and email to the office of Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick were not immediately returned.

Tomaselli's father, meanwhile, maintains his son is lying.

Two former Syracuse ball boys were the first to accuse Fine, who has called the allegations "patently false."

Bobby Davis, now 39, told ESPN that Fine molested him beginning in 1984 and that the sexual contact continued until he was around 27. A ball boy for six years, Davis told ESPN that the abuse occurred at Fine's home, at Syracuse basketball facilities and on team road trips, including the 1987 Final Four.

Davis' stepbrother, Mike Lang, 45, who also was a ball boy, told ESPN that Fine began molesting him while he was in fifth or sixth grade.

Syracuse placed Fine on paid administrative leave when the accusations surfaced.

No one answered the door at the Fine home Sunday. His attorneys released a statement saying Fine would not comment beyond his initial statement.

"Any comment from him would only invite and perpetuate ancient and suspect claims," attorneys Donald Martin and Karl Sleight said. "Mr. Fine remains hopeful of a credible and expeditious review of the relevant issues by law enforcement authorities."

Pete Moore, director of athletic communications at the university, said head coach Jim Boeheim "is not commenting further on the subject at this time."

Tomaselli said the scandal at Penn State involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky prompted him to come forward. Sandusky is accused in a grand jury indictment of sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year period.

"It was the Sandusky stuff that came out that really made me think about it," Tomaselli said in the phone interview. "A lot of people were slamming ESPN and Bobby for saying anything. I wanted to come out. ... It made me sick to see all that support for Fine at that point. I was positive he was guilty."

Tomaselli told the Post-Standard that he didn't ask Syracuse police or federal authorities for help in getting the criminal charges dismissed against him in Maine.

Tomaselli was arrested in April on 11 warrants charging gross sexual assault, tampering with a victim, two counts of unlawful sexual contact, five counts of visual sexual aggression against a child and unlawful sexual touching and unlawful sexual contact, Lewiston police said Sunday. They did not say what led to the charges. He has pleaded not guilty.

Tomaselli told the Post-Standard he met Fine after he and his father, Fred, attended a Syracuse autograph session on campus in late 2001.

The newspaper reported that Fine later called Tomaselli's parents to arrange for Tomaselli to go to Pittsburgh with the athletic department staff on a chartered bus, spend the night in Fine's hotel room and attend the team's game on Jan. 22, 2002.

Tomaselli told the Post-Standard that he had dinner with the team, then returned to the hotel room where he accused Fine of putting porn on the TV and fondling him in bed.

Tomaselli attended the basketball game the next day, sitting several rows behind the bench, and rode the chartered bus back to Syracuse, the newspaper reported.

"The one time there was multiple incidents in that one night, but there was only one night that he ever sexually abused me," Tomaselli told the AP.

However, during a phone interview with the AP, Fred Tomaselli said: "I'm 100 percent sure that Bernie Fine was never in contact with Zach. He never went to Pittsburgh to a game, never been to that arena."

"I brought him to a couple of games in Syracuse. We always sat in the nosebleed section and left after the game. He never stayed for any overnighters and never even got within shouting distance of Bernie."

The Post-Standard also reported that Zach Tomaselli was invited by Fine to a party at his home after the Syracuse-Pitt game on Feb. 1, 2003 ? a game where Zach Tomaselli said Fine arranged seats for him and his father several rows behind the bench.

Tomaselli told the newspaper his father, who was unable to attend the party, allowed him to go to Fine's house and stay the night.

While there, Tomaselli told the AP, Fine asked him to get into bed and that Fine's wife, Laurie, was there when it happened.

"I told them (police) that Laurie was standing right there when Bernie asked me to sleep in a bed. Laurie knew all about it," he said during the phone interview.

On Sunday, ESPN played an audiotape, obtained and recorded by Davis, of an October 2002 telephone conversation between him and Laurie Fine.

Davis told ESPN he made the recording, which also has been given to Syracuse police, without her knowledge because he knew he needed proof for the police to believe his accusations. ESPN said it hired a voice recognition expert to verify the voice on the tape and the network said it was determined to be that of Laurie Fine.

Davis also acknowledged in an interview with ESPN that he and Laurie Fine had a sexual relationship when he was 18, and that he eventually told Bernie Fine about it.

"I thought he was going to kill me, but I had to tell him," Davis said. "It didn't faze him one bit."

During the call to the woman, Davis repeatedly asks her what she knew about the alleged molestation.

"Do you think I'm the only one that he's ever done that to?" Davis asked.

"No ... I think there might have been others but it was geared to ... there was something about you," the woman on the tape said.

On the tape, she also says she knew "everything that went on."

"Bernie has issues, maybe that he's not aware of, but he has issues. ... And you trusted somebody you shouldn't have trusted ... "

During the call, Davis tells her he asked her husband in the late 1990s for $5,000 to help pay off his student loans.

"When he gave you the money, what does he want for that?" she asked.

He tells her that Fine wanted to engage in sexual activity in several ways.

"... And I'd try to go away, and he'd put his arm on top of my chest. He goes, `If you want this money, you'll stay right here,'" Davis said.

"Right. Right," she said. "He just has a nasty attitude, because he didn't get his money, nor did he get what he wanted."

On Friday, federal authorities carried out a search at his Fine's suburban Syracuse home but declined to comment on what they were looking for.

New York State Police spokesman Jack Keller said troopers were called to assist the U.S. attorney's office at the search. At least six police vehicles were parked on the street during the search, which lasted around nine hours. Officers carted away three file cabinets and a computer for further examination.

Police ban Congo rallies as election tensions flare (Reuters)

KINSHASA (Reuters) ? Police in the Congolese capital Kinshasa banned all campaign rallies on Saturday after rival supporters hurled rocks at each other and at least one person was reported dead as tensions rose two days before presidential and parliamentary elections.

Riot police used tear gas to disperse a political gathering in central Kinshasa and one person was injured as presidential guard members fired shots to clear opposition supporters from the airport, Reuters reporters said.

Asked to confirm reports of the ban, Kinshasa police chief Jean de Dieu Oleko told Reuters: "Yes, all of them."

President Joseph Kabila and his two main rivals, Etienne Tshisekedi and Vital Kamerhe, were all due to hold rallies within several hundred meters of each other later on Saturday.

Jacquemain Shabani Lukoo, secretary-general of Tshisekedi's UPDS party, said their event would continue as planned.

"It is Kabila who has canceled his meeting. We are carrying on with our meeting," Shabani said.

Citing health and security officials, a United Nations source said at least one person had died but there was no official confirmation of the death or its circumstances. A Reuters reporter saw a lifeless body on the road leading to the airport, where Tshisekedi was due to arrive from the provinces.

It was the latest sign of tension in the run-up to Congo's second presidential election since a 1998-2003 war, a poll which has been marked by opposition allegations of irregularities and concerns of inadequate preparations.

Despite a logistics operation supported by helicopters from South Africa and Angola, it is not clear whether all the ballot slips will have reached the 60,000 voting stations by Monday in a country two-thirds the size of the European Union.

DELAY?

Tshisekedi said he could accept a delay but only if the head of the national election commission, whom he accused of having political ties with Kabila and turning a blind eye to alleged irregularities, was sacked.

"I would agree (to a delay) if that meant a more credible, democratic and transparent process," the 78-year-old veteran opposition leader told French RFI radio.

"But one thing is clear: if we say there will be a delay, it is clear that the election commission cannot be led by Daniel Ngoy Mulunda," he said, accusing him of having been a founding member of Kabila's PPRD political party.

Mulunda, who will have the deciding vote if his commission is split on any election dispute, said this week he did not deny having been a member of the delegation that accompanies Kabila on foreign trips, but said he was not a founding PPRD member.

Tshisekedi alleged the existence on paper of fake polling stations to allow vote-rigging, a claim authorities have denied. His party also accuses Kabila of using state media and transport assets in the service of his campaign.

One election observer said authorities had said ballot slips for an electorate of 32 million eligible voters had arrived at regional so-called "sub-hubs" but added this did not guarantee they would reach often remote polling stations.

"We are a long way off," said the observer, who declined to be identified.

For many Congolese, there was a last-minute scramble to find out where they should be voting. Gervis Ilunga, a 44-year-old security guard, said he registered in one Kinshasa district but ultimately found his name elsewhere.

"In 2006, things were at least organized," he said of the first post-war poll largely organized under the auspices of the United Nations. "It is not like that this time ... There will be too many challenges this time."

Under constitutional amendments signed off by Kabila this year, the presidential vote will be decided in a single round, meaning the winner can claim victory with a simple majority. Analysts say that favors Kabila against the split opposition.

Blessed with lucrative resources of copper, cobalt and precious metals, Congo remains plagued by poverty and insecurity, especially in its rebel-infested east where a simmering low-level conflict persists.

Libyan official says oil output increasing fast (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? Libya's oil production is quickly increasing and now stands at more than 600,000 barrels a day, a prominent Libyan oil expert said Thursday.

Ali Tarhouni, who just stepped down as the oil and finance minister, said he expects production to reach 700,000 barrels a day within a few days.

He held his government post until a new transitional government was sworn in Thursday. He said he refused an offer to serve in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib because of the many challenges it will face in establishing governance and economic stability.

Before the civil war, Libya was producing about 1.6 million barrels per day. Tarhouni said he expects production to reach about 1.2 to 1.3 million barrels by next June, when elections are scheduled to be held.

"That would be tremendous," he said.

Tarhouni told reporters in Tripoli that he will not hold any official position for now. He said he plans instead to travel around the country to give lectures and meet with young people in an effort to encourage civil society and democracy.

Survey: iPhone owners most loyal to brand among mobile users (Digital Trends)

When it comes to brand loyalty in the smartphone market, Apple appears to be ahead of the pack. According to the results of a survey by research firm GfK, 84 percent of iPhone owners said they would choose another iPhone when they next replace their smartphone.

Among users of phones powered by Google?s Android operating system, 60 percent said they would stay with a phone using the same software.

Brand loyalty was weaker among BlackBerry users, with only 48 percent saying they would likely stick with one of Research In Motion?s devices. Last month the Canadian company had a torrid time of it, together with users of its smartphones, when its communication network suffered a three-day outage.

With 63 percent of consumers saying they will keep with the kind of phone that they currently own, it?s clearly getting more and more difficult for rival brands to elbow their way in. Of course, there are still opportunities ? if a company came out with a real head-turner of a product, it would undoubtedly shake up the market and put a consumer?s loyalty to the test.

Also, GfK analyst Ryan Garner suggests ?the richest rewards will go to those providers that can create the most harmonious user experience.?

For many people, Apple?s success can be attributed to clever marketing that encouraged consumers to make an emotional connection with its products. On top of that, the company got in early with the iPhone. It may not have been the first smartphone on the market, but for many consumers it was the first one that was actually smart. They lapped it up, and continue to do so, with more than four million units of the Cupertino company?s latest version of the device, the iPhone 4S, selling on its opening weekend last month.

But companies know they can?t rest on their laurels when it comes to loyalty. Slip behind the field in coming up with innovative ideas and groundbreaking products, or mess up badly with your service, and consumers will start looking elsewhere.

For its survey, GfK questioned approximately 4,500 people in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, China, the United States and Japan.

Libyan tribes protest at new government line-up (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Some of Libya's clans said on Wednesday they would not recognize the government, a day after the unveiling of a new cabinet revived regional and tribal rivalries which threaten the country's stability.

Prime minister designate Abdurrahim El-Keib named a cabinet line-up which aimed to placate Libya's patchwork of tribes, regional interests and ideological camps which are competing to fill the vacuum left by Muammar Gaddafi's fall from power.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) chief prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, said during a visit to Tripoli that the trial of Gaddafi's captured son, Saif al-Islam, could take place inside Libya as long as certain conditions were met.

He also told Reuters that he believed Gaddafi's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi, like Saif al-Islam wanted for prosecution by the ICC, had not been captured. Libyan officials had earlier said he had been arrested.

There was no immediate sign of dissent over the cabinet from the most powerful interests - in particular the Islamists who were given none of the biggest government posts - but smaller groups complained they had been neglected.

Announcing the government was the latest step in Libya's halting progress toward building new institutions, three months after the bloodiest of the "Arab Spring" uprisings ended Gaddafi's 42-year rule.

About 150 people protested on Wednesday morning outside a hotel in the eastern city of Benghazi where the interim leadership, the National Transitional Council, has offices, a witness told Reuters.

The protesters held up banners saying: "No to a government of outsiders!" the witness said. The demonstration was led by members of the Benghazi-based Awagi and Maghariba tribes, who were angry their representatives were not in key posts.

BERBER PROTESTS

Elsewhere, a group calling itself the Libyan Amazigh Congress said in a statement it was suspending all relations with the NTC in protest at the choice of cabinet ministers.

The Amazigh, or Berber, are an ethnic minority which suffered persecution under Gaddafi and which is pressing for greater recognition for its language and culture in the new Libya.

In the predominantly Amazigh town of Jadu, in the Nafusa mountains south-west of Tripoli, about 30 young men gathered in a central square recruiting people to travel to the capital to demand better representation.

"We are going to Tripoli to stage a peaceful sit-in to protest the ministerial appointments," one of the men, Tarek Yussef Labah, told Reuters. "The Nafusa mountains were one of the first places to turn against Gaddafi."

The ICC earlier this year issued a warrant for Saif al-Islam's arrest on charges of crimes against humanity. After talks with Libyan officials, Moreno-Ocampo said the ICC would not insist on his transfer to The Hague for trial.

"My standard, the standard of the ICC, is that it has to be a judicial process that is not organized to shield the suspect. That's it," Moreno-Ocampo told reporters.

"The point is that for Libya, and I respect that, it is very important to do the cases in Libya. This is a right and I have nothing to say. I'm not competing for the case."

Saif al-Islam, dressed in traditional nomad attire, was captured on Saturday in an ambush in the Sahara desert. An NTC official said his arrest was "the last chapter in the Libyan drama."

ISLAMISTS SIDELINED?

Western countries, which backed the revolt against Gaddafi and have a big stake in seeing his replacements succeed, welcomed the new government, saying it would guide the oil exporting country toward democracy.

The cabinet line-up appeared to be a setback for the Islamists who in the past few months have emerged as a powerful force and had been eyeing the post of defense minister. Islamist leaders have so far not reacted to the appointments.

By his choice of ministers, the Libyan prime minister "is risking sparking a confrontation with Islamist leaders that could threaten the already delicate security environment in the country," the Eurasia Group consultancy wrote.

The NTC's choices to fill ministerial posts appeared to have put regional affiliation ahead of experience or a track record. Several seasoned officials were overlooked in favor of relative unknowns.

The leader of one of Tripoli's two most powerful anti-Gaddafi militias, which are trying to parlay their military muscle into political influence, said his men would respect the new government.

Abdullah Naker, head of the Tripoli Revolutionary Council, said the formation of the cabinet was the cue for ex-rebel militias to switch from war to politics.

He changed out of his usual military fatigues and arrived for a news conference in a suit and tie. "We are going to start a civilian state," he said.

Naker told reporters the men under his command, who he said numbered nearly 100,000, would transfer their allegiance to the defense and interior ministries, though he did not say when that would happen.

He also said he was going to set up a political party to work for the rights of those men who took up arms to bring down Gaddafi. "Libya has now become a democratic state," said Naker.

California Republicans quietly expand federal health insurance for ...

Charles Dharapak/AP

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (foreground), the No. 3 Republican in the House, speaks while Majority Leader Eric Cantor listens. McCarthy has made it clear that he wants the health overhaul law repealed. But conservative lawmakers in his hometown of Bakersfield, Calif., are accepting federal money to expand Medicaid.

President Obama has many Republican detractors to his health law overhaul. One of the most vocal is Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the No. 3 conservative in the House, who has made it clear that he would like the law repealed. But GOP lawmakers in McCarthy's hometown of Bakersfield are actually expanding insurance coverage for low-income adults.

Earlier this year, the Kern County Board of Supervisors ? all Republicans ? voted to accept federal money to expand insurance coverage for low-income adults. The federal law extends Medicaid coverage to millions of Americans in 2014, including childless adults. But with permission ? and dollars ? from the federal government, California started the expansion early.

Indeed, all 58 counties in California, except Fresno, are offering care to more poor residents, which includes the most conservative counties, like Modoc, Orange, San Diego and Kern.

Expanding coverage to the 63,000 uninsured county residents couldn't come too soon for Paul Hensler, the administrator in charge of the county's public hospital, Kern Medical Center.

"Our proposal was to expand coverage to those that don't have coverage and reduce the cost of care and improve outcomes," he said. Because the county is now assigning uninsured, low-income adults ? who up until now have been excluded from Medicaid ? to primary care clinics, their chronic diseases are managed better, keeping them out of his emergency room.

Surprisingly though, the roll-out of what conservatives derisively call "Obamacare" has largely gone unnoticed in Bakersfield.

"This is one of those things that is being implemented under the radar," says Ken Mettler, who helped found the Tea Party in Bakersfield. A dogged critic of the local board of supervisors, even Mettler wasn't aware what the county was doing until asked about it by a reporter.

He says elected officials vigorously denounce the federal health law, but then are all too eager to roll it out.

"They always have to make this leap of logic that if we don't take the money, somebody else will. We will not be able to provide services that we're mandated to provide," Mettler said. "No one has the political courage to stand up and say, 'Look, this is wrong on all levels, and if we don't take a stand, who will?'"

But Supervisor Ray Watson, who has represented Kern County's west side for nine years, says the move was necessary because California law mandates that counties offer basic medical care and emergency services to impoverished residents.

"We are on the hook already," says Watson. "We get some funding, but it's far from what is required to care for those people."

Counties ? which have suffered mightily in the economic downturn ? are often on the losing end. When the economy slows and people lose their health insurance, demand for county services goes up. Watson, a Republican, says it's a matter of fairness, not ideology.

"We have one of the lowest rates of returns of federal dollars," Watson says, referring to the ratio of dollars paid in federal taxes to dollars returned to Kern County. "It's not fair for our taxpayers to have to pay the burden of indigent care. ... If it's a policy of the government to make sure that we don't have people suffering in the streets, then the government needs to find a way to pay for it."

Watson is no fan of the federal health law, but he says the uninsured do need some basic level of care, and moving them away from the emergency room and into regular primary care makes sense.

Republican Supervisor Karen Goh, who represents Kern County's poorest neighborhoods, agrees.

"We have obesity. We have high blood pressure. We have just about every bad thing," says Goh. " Getting people to have those regular checkups ? that's a very important thing in a community of poverty."

Goh is of two minds when it comes to the federal health law. She says it's unfair that sick people can't get health insurance, but she also opposes mandates on private businesses. She thinks local church groups ? including one that runs a mobile van called the Jesus Shack ? are filling some of the need. But, it seems implausible church groups could do it all.

Still, to some conservative voters in Kern County, the supervisors' support of the early Medicaid expansion ? explicitly stated or not ? is tantamount to an endorsement of the federal health law. And that, says Republican political consultant Stan Harper, is a liability.

"I would say in Kern County and the immediate surrounding counties that if a candidate was out to run and support ObamaCare, they would lose," Harper said.

It's unclear how the county's Medicaid expansion might play in any future elections. Despite repeated requests for an interview, McCarthy would only say that in theory, moving people into preventive programs was a good idea, but he didn't comment specifically on the efforts under way in Kern County.

The Bakersfield Tea Party says they're paying attention now, and they'll be looking to back candidates, even on the county level, that want to get rid of the federal health law entirely.

American spies outed, CIA suffers in Lebanon

(AP) ? The CIA's operations in Lebanon have been badly damaged after Hezbollah identified and captured a number of U.S. spies recently, current and former U.S. officials told The Associated Press. The intelligence debacle is particularly troubling because the CIA saw it coming.

Hezbollah's longtime leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, boasted on television in June that he had rooted out at least two CIA spies who had infiltrated the ranks of Hezbollah, which the U.S. considers a terrorist group closely allied with Iran. Though the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon officially denied the accusation, current and former officials concede that it happened and the damage has spread even further.

In recent months, CIA officials have secretly been scrambling to protect their remaining spies ? foreign assets or agents working for the agency ? before Hezbollah can find them.

To be sure, some deaths are to be expected in shadowy spy wars. It's an extremely risky business and people get killed. But the damage to the agency's spy network in Lebanon has been greater than usual, several former and current U.S. officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about security matters.

The Lebanon crisis is the latest mishap involving CIA counterintelligence, the undermining or manipulating of the enemy's ability to gather information. Former CIA officials have said that once-essential skill has been eroded as the agency shifted from outmaneuvering rival spy agencies to fighting terrorists. In the rush for immediate results, former officers say, tradecraft has suffered.

The most recent high-profile example was the suicide bomber who posed as an informant and killed seven CIA employees and wounded six others in Khost, Afghanistan in December 2009.

Last year, then-CIA director Leon Panetta said the agency had to maintain "a greater awareness of counterintelligence." But eight months later, Nasrallah let the world know he had bested the CIA, demonstrating that the agency still struggles with this critical aspect of spying and sending a message to those who would betray Hezbollah.

The CIA was well aware the spies were vulnerable in Lebanon. CIA officials were warned, including the chief of the unit that supervises Hezbollah operations from CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., and the head of counterintelligence. It remains unclear whether anyone has been or will be held accountable in the wake of this counterintelligence disaster or whether the incident will affect the CIA's ability to recruit assets in Lebanon.

In response to AP's questions about what happened in Lebanon, a U.S. official said Hezbollah is recognized as a complicated enemy responsible for killing more Americans than any other terrorist group before September 2001. The agency does not underestimate the organization, the official said.

The CIA's toughest adversaries, like Hezbollah and Iran, have for years been improving their ability to hunt spies, relying on patience and guile to exploit counterintelligence holes.

In 2007, for instance, when Ali-Reza Asgari, a brigadier general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps of Iran, disappeared in Turkey, it was assumed that he was either killed or defected. In response, the Iranian government began a painstaking review of foreign travel by its citizens, particularly to places like Turkey where Iranians don't need a visa and could meet with foreign intelligence services.

It didn't take long, a Western intelligence official told the AP, before the U.S., Britain and Israel began losing contact with some of their Iranian spies.

The State Department last year described Hezbollah as "the most technically capable terrorist group in the world," and the Defense Department estimates it receives between $100 million and $200 million per year in funding from Iran.

Backed by Iran, Hezbollah has built a professional counterintelligence apparatus that Nasrallah ? whom the U.S. government designated an international terrorist a decade ago ? proudly describes as the "spy combat unit." U.S. intelligence officials believe the unit, which is considered formidable and ruthless, went operational in about 2004.

Using the latest commercial software, Nasrallah's spy-hunters unit began methodically searching for spies in Hezbollah's midst. To find them, U.S. officials said, Hezbollah examined cellphone data looking for anomalies. The analysis identified cellphones that, for instance, were used rarely or always from specific locations and only for a short period of time. Then it came down to old-fashioned, shoe-leather detective work: Who in that area had information that might be worth selling to the enemy?

The effort took years but eventually Hezbollah, and later the Lebanese government, began making arrests. By one estimate, 100 Israeli assets were apprehended as the news made headlines across the region in 2009. Some of those suspected Israeli spies worked for telecommunications companies and served in the military.

Back at CIA headquarters, the arrests alarmed senior officials. The agency prepared a study on its own vulnerabilities, U.S. officials said, and the results proved to be prescient.

The analysis concluded that the CIA was susceptible to the same analysis that had compromised the Israelis, the officials said.

CIA managers were instructed to be extra careful about handling sources in Lebanon. A U.S. official said recommendations were issued to counter the potential problem.

But it's unclear what preventive measures were taken by the Hezbollah unit chief or the officer in charge of the Beirut station. Former officials say the Hezbollah unit chief is no stranger to the necessity of counterintelligence and knew the risks. The unit chief has worked overseas in hostile environments like Afghanistan and played an important role in the capture of a top terrorist while stationed in the Persian Gulf region after the attacks of 9/11.

"We've lost a lot of people in Beirut over the years, so everyone should know the drill," said a former Middle East case officer familiar with the situation.

But whatever actions the CIA took, they were not enough. Like the Israelis, bad tradecraft doomed these CIA assets and the agency ultimately failed to protect them, an official said. In some instances, CIA officers fell into predictable patterns when meeting their sources, the official said.

This allowed Hezbollah to identify assets and case officers and unravel at least part of the CIA's spy network in Lebanon. There was also a reluctance to share cases and some files were put in "restricted handling." The designation severely limits the number of people who know the identity of the source but also reduces the number of experts who could spot problems that might lead to their discovery, officials said.

Nasrallah's televised announcement in June was followed by finger-pointing among departments inside the CIA as the spy agency tried figure out what went wrong and contain the damage.

The fate of these CIA assets is unknown. Hezbollah treats spies differently, said Matthew Levitt, a counterterrorism and intelligence expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Studies who's writing a book about the terrorist organization

"It all depends on who these guys were and what they have to say," Levitt said. "Hezbollah has disappeared people before. Others they have kept around."

Who's responsible for the mess in Lebanon? It's not clear. The chief of Hezbollah operations at CIA headquarters continues to run the unit that also focuses on Iranians and Palestinians. The CIA's top counterintelligence officer, who was one of the most senior women in the clandestine service, recently retired after approximately five years in the job. She is credited with some important cases, including the recent arrests of Russian spies who had been living in the U.S. for years.

Officials said the woman was succeeded by a more experienced operations officer. That officer has held important posts in Moscow, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Balkans, important frontlines of the agency's spy wars with foreign intelligence services and terrorist organizations.

Deficit gridlock looms, supercommittee deadlocked (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Deadline nearing, the deficit-reduction talks in Congress sank toward gridlock Friday after supercommittee Democrats rejected a late Republican offer that included next-to-nothing in new tax revenue. Each side maneuvered to blame the other for a looming stalemate.

The panel faces a deadline of next Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, and lawmakers on both sides stressed they were ready to meet through the weekend in a last-ditch search for compromise.

But there was little indication after a day of closed-door meetings that a breakthrough was likely, both Democrats and Republicans emphasizing long-held political positions.

"Where the divide is right now is over taxes, and whether the wealthiest Americans should share in the sacrifices," said Washington Sen. Patty Murray, the Democratic co-chair of the panel.

But Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, said Republicans had offered "a balanced, bipartisan plan - the fact that it was rejected makes it clear that Washington Democrats won't cut a dime in government spending without job-killing tax hikes."

While prospects for a deal faded, House Democrats checked a Republican attempt to pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. The vote was 261-165, or 23 shy of the two-thirds majority required. GOP lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favor, while Democrats generally opposed it, sealing its doom.

The vote on a noisy House floor contrasted to the secretive proceedings inside the supercommittee, a panel that projected optimism when it began its quest for a deficit deal late last summer but has yet to come to any significant compromise.

Republicans disclosed during the day they had outlined an offer on Thursday for about $543 billion in spending cuts ? leaving Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security untouched ? and $3 billion in higher tax revenue.

Most if not all of the recommended savings were items that Democrats have agreed to in earlier talks, but only, party officials said, on condition they part of a larger deal in which Republicans agreed to additional tax increases.

Democrats have long demanded that Republicans agree to significant amounts of higher taxes on the wealthy as part of any deal, and they quickly rejected the offer, according to officials in both parties.

It was unclear where the talks would turn next, but the GOP proposal suggested the discussions had effectively moved into a range of savings far below the $1.2 trillion the committee has been seeking.

It also appeared Republicans were jettisoning a plan for $300 billion in higher tax revenue, an offer that had exposed internal GOP divisions when it was presented two weeks ago. It also has failed to generate momentum for a compromise among Democrats.

If the panel fails to reach agreement, $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts are to take effect beginning in 2013, a prospect that lawmakers in both parties say they want to avoid.

That is particularly true among defense hawks, who argue that the Pentagon cannot sustain the estimated $500 billion in cuts that would be required on top of the $450 billion already in the works.

In a letter to Murray and Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, the GOP chairman of the supercommittee, the head of the House Armed Services Committee warned of "immediate, dire and in some cases irrevocable" damage to the nation's military. "Our ability to respond to national security crises or humanitarian disasters would be disrupted," added Rep. Howard P. (Buck) McKeon, R-Calif.

Republicans familiar with the GOP plan said it included $543 billion in spending cuts, fees and other non-tax revenue, as well as the $3 billion corporate jet provision. There also would be $98 billion in reduced interest costs.

Officials familiar with the offer said it would save the government $121 billion by requiring federal civilian workers to contribute more to their pension plans, shave $23 billion from farm and nutrition programs and generate $15 billion from new auctions of broadcast spectrum to wireless companies.

It also would claim about $100 billion in savings from Pentagon civilian personnel costs and another $35 billion by increasing the fee that mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac charge lenders to guarantee repayment of new loans. The fee increase would add $15 a month to the monthly cost of an average new mortgage.

The per-ticket security fee to pay for Transportation Security Administration operations at the nation's airports would increase, and $18 billion would come from savings within Postal Service accounts.

Genocide court gives Rwanda ex-mayor 15 years (AP)

ARUSHA, Tanzania ? A former mayor who was one of the most wanted suspects in Rwanda's 1994 genocide has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for crimes against humanity and genocide, the U.N. International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda said.

The court had charged Gregoire Ndahimana with being responsible for the deaths of about 2,000 Tutsis, most of whom died when bulldozers knocked down the church where they had sought refuge.

The court said in a statement the former mayor of Kivumu was found guilty of genocide and extermination by aiding and abetting and because he had authority over local police. The court said it dismissed another count of complicity in genocide.

The slaughter "reflected broad coordination" among several groups, the court noted.

"Though this did in no way exonerate the accused, it did, however, suggest that his participation through aiding and abetting may have resulted from duress rather than from extremism or ethnic hatred," the court's statement read.

Ndahimana had been on the run for 15 years before he was captured in Congo and sent to the detention facility in Arusha in 2009.

More than half a million members of the Tutsi ethnic minority and moderates from the Hutu majority were slaughtered during the 100-day genocide. Many former Hutu militia leaders fled to Congo, which neighbors Rwanda, after Tutsi rebels fought their way to power.

U.S. officials said in a statement that they welcomed the decision as "an important step in providing justice and accountability for the Rwandan people and the international community."

"The conviction of Mr. Ndahimana is of particular significance, because as mayor of Kivumu he had authority over the police, and yet failed to prevent the massacre of more than 1,500 people who sought refuge and protection.

Militia, police, civil and religious authorities participated in bulldozing the church, burying the refugees sheltered inside," read a statement issued by the State Department.

The U.S. also called on all countries to seek nine fugitives still sought by the court.

Most retailers are now expecting to stock the ICS-powered Nexus next Tuesday or Wednesday -- Nov. 22/23 -- so if you're not up for committing to another 24-month contract , you'll have to endure another week with whatever smartphone is currently in your pocket.

If you are after a new contract, you'll be able to sign up for a variety of 18 to 24-month plans with Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange or O2 over on the Phones4U website (check the source link). Notably absent from the list is Three, which appears to be in the same boat as everyone else, shipping on the 22nd or 23rd. See the source link for more info.

Late Tebow touchdown lifts Broncos over Jets (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Broncos rookie quarterback Tim Tebow bulldozed his way into the end zone for a last-minute touchdown to give Denver a 17-13 win over the New York Jets on Thursday.

Tebow eluded a Jets blitz on third down and rumbled 20 yards for the score to complete a 12-play, 95-yard game-winning drive.

"I like winning but I wish it wasn't quite that stressful," Tebow told reporters.

The Broncos have now won four of five games since Tebow took over from Kyle Orton as starting quarterback, improving to 5-5 and keeping the pressure on AFC West leaders Oakland.

On the decisive drive Tebow ran for 57 yards and completed three of five passes, including a key 18 yard strike to Dante Rosario, to move Denver into field goal range. Tebow finished the game 9-of-20 passing for 104 yards and ran for 68 yards.

He led the Broncos to victory over Kansas in the previous game despite completing just two of eight passes.

"When you look at how people play in this league, and how teams normally win, and you don't do it that way, people are going to talk about it and criticize it," Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said.

"But at the end of the day it's about winning, and if it works, keep doing it."

The Jets slipped to 5-5 with their second loss, denting their chances of catching New England at the top of the AFC East. They are also behind Buffalo in the division.

"Our playoffs start next week," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said, "and we better find a way to beat Buffalo."

An exchange of field goals marked the only scoring in the first half, but the visiting Jets went 10-3 up after scoring on the first drive of the second half, Matt Slauson pouncing on a fumble by team mate Bilal Powell and crossing the line.

However, the Broncos got back on level terms when Andre Goodman intercepted a pass by Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and returned it for a touchdown.

Nick Folk put the Jets back in front with a 45 yard field goal before Tebow's touchdown sealed the game for Denver.

"He shocked me," Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis said of Tebow. "He probably shocked a lot of people, but he did it. I'm just shocked now."

RI gaming may be hurt by Mass. casinos | WPRI.com

LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) - The passage of the casino bill Tuesday by Massachusetts lawmakers has Rhode Island gaming facilities fighting to stay competitive.

Governor Deval Patrick says he will likely sign the bill which would license three resort-style casinos and one slot parlor in the Bay State.

Officials at Twin River in Lincoln, who would likely be hurt by full-fledged casinos right over the Rhode Island border, want to level the playing field.

?Passage today of the MA casino bill expected to enjoy Governor Patrick?s support further highlights the need for table games at Twin River. Rhode Islanders will have an important opportunity to level the playing field in November of 2012 by carefully considering, and then supporting, a referendum question that will allow Twin River to offer table games," said spokesperson Patti Doyle.

Twin River is currently the state?s third largest source of revenue, bringing in $270 million annually.

Health Tip: Giving Kids Medicine (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- It's often a challenge to convince kids to take much-needed medicine when they're sick.

The American Academy of Family Physicians offers these suggestions to make medicine more palatable for children:

  • Refrigerate liquid medicines before giving them to a child.
  • If the doctor or pharmacist says it's ok, mix the medication with a bit of juice or pudding.
  • Ask your pharmacist to mix flavoring into the medication before you take it home.
  • Explain to the child that the medicine will help him or her feel better.

Clinton book argues for bigger government role in recovery (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Government has a critical role in powering the U.S. economy's turnaround and preparing it to compete in the 21st century, former President Bill Clinton argues in his new book, "Back To Work: Why We Need A Smart Government For A Strong Economy."

The slim volume - the 42nd president's contribution to a growing debate about government's role in American society ahead of next year's national elections - is as much an outline for rehabilitating the economy as it is an attack on the Tea Party and what Clinton calls the "anti-government" ethos he says now pervades the Republican Party.

Clinton views Republicans' current staunch opposition to tax increases and their general disdain for government as an extreme manifestation of President Ronald Reagan's pivotal dictum that "government is the problem."

That philosophy, Clinton says, has proved disastrous, inducing rising income inequality and stagnant wages while putting the United States at a competitive disadvantage with other nations.

"The inevitable consequence of their policies is to push the pedal to the metal of the most destructive trends of the past thirty years, to increase inequality and instability, and to forfeit the future," Clinton says of anti-government "ideologues."

To support his argument, Clinton surveys the role various other governments are playing in kick-starting their economies. Singapore, for example, has created a hub for the biotechnology industry, while Germany's burgeoning solar power industry has created 300,000 jobs, he writes.

"How?" Clinton asks. "With government subsidies and targets."

Clinton finds ways for government to nudge job-creating corporations in the right direction, starting with banks.

Sweden's central bank encourages lending by charging banks a fee for holding their deposits, for example. That could work in the United States, where many banks keep deposits with the Federal Reserve at no cost, Clinton says.

"If the Fed imposed even a modest fee of one-fourth of 1 percent on bank deposits it holds, the banks might be more willing to lend so they could make, not lose, money on the cash they have," Clinton writes. "It's worth a try."

DEMOCRATS A PUZZLE

Anti-tax Republicans aren't the only focus of Clinton's criticism. His own Democratic Party is another.

He is mystified that President Barack Obama and the Democratic-led Congress didn't raise the debt ceiling in late 2010, while they still held a majority, instead subjecting themselves to bruising negotiations this year with Republicans emboldened by their mid-term elections wins.

"To the outside world, the United States looked weak and confused, completely in the grip of the anti-government zealots in the House Republican caucus," Clinton said of last summer's stalemate between Obama and Republicans that sparked a historic downgrade of the United States credit rating by Standard and Poor's on August 5.

He also faulted the Democratic National Committee for not arranging a unified message to counter the Republicans in the run-up to the 2010 mid-terms, despite what he called his own efforts and those of Vice President Joe Biden.

The two asked the DNC to distribute a centralized set of talking points "so Democratic foot soldiers would at least have some good ammunition for their phone and door-to-door campaigns," Clinton said. "We couldn't persuade the decision makers to do so."

Still, "Back To Work" won't likely satisfy Republicans seeking juicy campaign ad fodder against Obama from Clinton.

Clinton generally sympathizes with the challenges facing Obama and heartily agrees with the goals of the stimulus bill, the measures taken to stabilize the banking and automobile industries, and the president's recent jobs proposal.

"President Obama has a tough hand to play," he says.

Clinton also defends himself against criticisms that his administration's approval in 1999 of repealing key sections of the Glass-Steagall Act set the stage for the mortgage crisis that exploded almost a decade later.

Those changes broke down the barriers between investment banking and commercial banking that critics have blamed in part for the meltdown of Wall Street firms in 2008.

Since the late 1980s, Clinton writes, Federal Reserve rulings had eliminated restraints on the ability of big banks to pursue commercial and investment banking activities.

"The real problem," Clinton says, was that the Securities and Exchange Commission "lacked the authority to require investment banks to set aside more cash to cover high-risk investments ... and the bank regulators didn't do enough to limit commercial banks' risky loans."

Clinton admits he could be "fairly criticized" for not reining in financial derivatives, though he says he couldn't have done anything anyway because of Republican opposition.

"I should have spoken out more," he says. "In not doing so, I ignored one of my own rules: even when you can't win, it's best to get caught trying."

Would 'Sister Wives' consider brother husbands?

TLC

Kody Brown and his wives discuss their views on plural marriage.

By Ree Hines

A one-husband-to-four-wives ratio may be fine for the ?Sister Wives? family, but what would they think of adding a few more men to the mix? On Sunday night?s episode of the TLC reality show, Kody Brown?s brides addressed that question.

?You know, that?s not a tenant of our faith,? Kody?s first wife, Meri, told a group of students in Boston after one inquired if they would consider brother husbands.

Wife No. 2, Janelle, then took the microphone right out of Meri?s hand to add, ?Who really wants that? Do you? I?m sorry, but guys are tons, a lot of work, right??

Later, speaking directly to the camera, Janelle explained her take on their marital arrangement.

?Religions have rules and beliefs,? she said. ?It can even be as simple as conduct in a marriage or foods that you can and cannot eat. Every religion has rules that they think bring them closer to God. That is how it is for us. We feel like living plural marriage is a commandment designed for our happiness.?

As long as there?s just one man, Meri reiterated.

?The way that the plural marriage is for us ? that we believe and we accept ? is one man and multiple wives,? she continued. ?We just don?t do it the other way around. I would not ever choose to have more than one husband. From a religious standpoint, because I don?t believe that?s right. And also from a personal standpoint, I need my me time, and I wouldn?t get it if I had many guys around. I?m not going there.? ?

And from the disapproving look on Kody?s face, it seems likely he wouldn?t go there either.

What did you think of the family?s open Q&A session during the episode? Were you surprised by their take on brother husbands? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Justin Timberlake attends Marine Corps ball

Justin Timberlake is a man of his word!

On Saturday, the 30-year-old singer-actor attended the Marine Corps Ball with Corporal Kelsey De Santis in Richmond, VA.?

PHOTOS: JT's style evolution

He wrote on his website that the event "turned out to be one of the most moving evenings I've ever had."?

As for De Santis? "She seemed to be so humble and honest... Very cool," he wrote. "She also simultaneously seemed like she was nervous about the whole evening and if I was going to enjoy myself...I have to tell you, it's not every day that I meet a 23 year old girl and she's more worried about if I'm having fun or if I'm comfortable! It hit me all of a sudden that these were the type of people that look after us and our freedom... Humble, concerned for others before themselves... This was the type of person our Marine Corps was building. I was really blown away."

WTVR.com: Attendee captured photo of Timberlake at the ball

A video montage of Pearl Harbor, World War II and the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks "almost brought [Timberlake] to tears." He wrote that it was "a surreal moment to be in that room with so many of our great Marines who have such a different type of connection to those stories."

How did Timberlake end up at the ball? In July, his "Friends with Benefits" costar Mila Kunis was first invited to the Nov. 18 Marine Corps Ball in Greenville, NC by Sergeant Scott Moore. The marine made a YouTube video asking Kunis, 28, to be his date to the fete.

PHOTOS: Justin and more southern superstars

After Timberlake encouraged Kunis to accept Moore's invitation, De Santis followed suit, also inviting the "In Time" star to a Marine Corps ball via YouTube. "If you can't go," De Santis said in the clip. "All I have to say is cry me a river! Hit me up."?

PHOTOS: Stars' good deeds

When asked at a Cancun press conference this summer whether he intended to attend the ball, Timberlake said yes. "But not because she shouted out one of my songs, which I do love," he said. "And not because she had all those beefcake military guys behind her to try to intimidate me -- although that probably would have worked by itself. I don't get asked out ever! So I was very flattered by that."

PHOTOS: All the ladies JT's romanced!

Timberlake wrote that he was "proud to be [at the Corps Ball]" and "felt like I was getting a chance to be among my heroes. It's funny too because a lot of them are SO younger than me."?

"I've met so many of my heroes -- from Michael Jordan to Michael Jackson -- and nothing makes me feel more honor and pride than when I get to meet one of you," Timberlake added, referring to those who serve. "Last night changed my life and I will never forget it."

Taiwanese official accused of abusing housekeeper

(AP) ? Federal prosecutors in Kansas City have jailed a Taiwanese official on a felony labor violation involving her housekeeper ? a charge experts say has rarely, if ever, been applied to a foreign official.

Hsien-Hsien Liu, director general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Kansas City, is accused of vastly underpaying the woman, restricting when she could sleep and making her work 16 to 18 hours a day.

Liu, 64, was arrested and charged Thursday with fraud in foreign labor contracting, which is punishable by up to five years in federal prison. She was held without bond until a hearing Wednesday. Court records do not list an attorney for her.

TECO's main office in Washington did not respond to phone and email messages left Friday seeking comment. The organization's website said the office was closed Friday in observance of Veterans Day.

Prosecutors said Liu's office maintains unofficial relations between the United States and Taiwan and is similar to a foreign government consulate, although the U.S. doesn't recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state.

Federal prosecutors in Kansas City told The Kansas City Star that Liu is believed to be the first foreign official to face this charge in the United States. While others have been prosecuted for mistreating domestic workers, Liu is accused of violating a law covering the recruitment of foreign workers and their transport into the United States on fraudulent terms, prosecutors said.

Michael LeRoy, a labor law professor at the University of Illinois, said the charge against Liu was filed under a human trafficking law reauthorized in 2008. He said while similar laws have been used extensively in the U.S., he wasn't aware of that specific charge being used previously against a foreign official and Liu's case "represents a novel circumstance."

"I'm willing to venture it's relatively untested," he said. "She has some serious charge there."

An FBI affidavit filed in the case claims TECO recruited the housekeeper in the Philippines in September 2011. According to the woman's visa application, her two-year employment contract called for her to be paid $1,240 a month, work 40-hour weeks and be entitled to overtime.

Prosecutors claim the woman was actually paid $400 to $450 a month, worked 16- to 18-hour days and was monitored with video surveillance equipment at Liu's home in Johnson County, Kan. They also say Liu took the woman's passport and was "verbally abusive."

Liu, who is also known as Jacqueline Liu, told the woman "she was friends with local law enforcement and known well in the community" and if the woman "acted out, she would be deported," the affidavit said.

Authorities learned about the situation after the women complained to a man from the Philippines who she met a grocery store. Prosecutors said he helped her leave Liu's home in August.

A witness quoted in the affidavit said Liu treated a previous housekeeper similarly, until she "went into a state of depression and stopped eating." It wasn't clear what happened to that woman.

Kurt Taylor Gaubatz, an international studies professor at Old Dominion University in Virginia, said it was unlikely Liu would qualify for diplomatic immunity in the case.

"There have been several stories about diplomatic abuse of household help both in the U.S. and abroad, and the critical issue is what level (she is)," Gaubatz said. "If you're an ambassador and you beat you domestic help, diplomatic immunity is going to get you off.

"But it doesn't mean it's going to be consequence-free for you" because charges can then be filed in the person's home country.

Gaubatz said Liu may have qualified for immunity if the charges somehow related to her job, but that didn't seem to be the case.

"Lawyers are going to say in order to maintain the duties of a consular officer they need domestic help," he said. "But frankly I don't see that going very far."

Linda Trout, executive director of Kansas City's International Relations Council, said she has known Liu since she arrived in Kansas City about two years ago and worked with her on several occasions. She described her as "businesslike" and "very nice."

Trout also said Liu announced last month that she was returning to Taiwan, and Trout met recently with a lead representative for Taiwan in Washington, where they discussed Liu's pending move and her replacement in Kansas City.

"She was very accommodating. We had a good relationship," Trout said. "She told me more than a month ago she had been reassigned back to Taiwan. She told me it was because of the number of years she had been out of Taiwan and the office wanted her back."

Liu's planned departure also was posted on TECO's website in October.
