China manufacturing improves in October

BEIJING (AP) ? China's manufacturing improved in October, adding to signs the world's second-largest economy might be recovering from its deepest slump since the 2008 global crisis, two business surveys showed Thursday.

The state-sanctioned China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing's monthly purchasing managers index improved to 50.2 from September's 49.8 on a 100-point scale on which numbers above 50 indicate activity is expanding. Separately, HSBC Corp. said its own PMI improved to an eight-month high of 49.5 from September's 47.9, though it still showed activity contracting.

The Chinese numbers are rare good news for the world economy, which has slowed as Europe's chronic debt crisis worsened and the American economy stagnated.

The improvement comes as Communist Party leaders prepare for a once-a-decade handover of power to younger leaders that is due to start at a party congress next week.

Economic growth fell to a 3 ? year low of 7.6 percent in the quarter ending in September but other indicators including retail sales and investment are improving. Analysts expect overall growth to revive this quarter but say a rebound will be too weak to drive a global recovery without improvement in the United States and Europe.

The October data imply that "China's industrial activity continues to bottom out following a modest pickup last month," said HSBC economist Hongbin Qu in a statement. He said that was driven by an increase in new orders but the export outlook "remains challenging."

"We expect a continuation of policy easing to further boost domestic demand and counterbalance the external weakness, leading to a gradual growth recovery in the coming quarters," Qu said.

Analysts have cautioned that a Chinese recovery is likely to be "L-shaped," meaning the decline might have stopped but improvements in growth should be gradual. That would be a setback for exporters of iron ore, copper and other commodities that are counting on China to help drive a rebound in global demand.

The slowdown is due largely to government curbs imposed on investment and construction to cool overheating and try to nurture a more self-sustaining expansion supported by domestic consumption.

That has hurt China's large construction industry and demand for steel, cement and other materials. An unexpected slump in global demand for Chinese goods last year hurt exporters.

Retail sales rose 14.4 percent in September, accelerating from the first half's 14.1 percent growth. Investment in factories and other fixed assets rose 20.5 percent in the first nine months of the year, up from a 20.2 percent rate for the first eight months.

Chinese leaders have cut interest rates twice since early June and are pumping money into the economy through higher spending by state companies and on building airports and other public works. They have avoided a larger stimulus after their multibillion-dollar spending in response to the 2008 global crisis fueled inflation and a wasteful building boom.

Sandy's death toll climbs; millions without power

NEW YORK (AP) ? Millions of people from Maine to the Carolinas awoke Tuesday without electricity, and an eerily quiet New York City was all but closed off by car, train and air as superstorm Sandy steamed inland, still delivering punishing wind and rain. The U.S. death toll climbed to 39, many of the victims killed by falling trees.

The full extent of the damage in New Jersey, where the storm roared ashore Monday night with hurricane-force winds of 80 mph, was unclear. Police and fire officials, some with their own departments flooded, fanned out to rescue hundreds.

"We are in the midst of urban search and rescue. Our teams are moving as fast as they can," Gov. Chris Christie said. "The devastation on the Jersey Shore is some of the worst we've ever seen. The cost of the storm is incalculable at this point."

More than 8.2 million people across the East were without power. Airlines canceled more than 15,000 flights around the world, and it could be days before the mess is untangled and passengers can get where they're going.

The storm also disrupted the presidential campaign with just a week to go before Election Day.

President Barack Obama canceled a third straight day of campaigning, scratching events scheduled for Wednesday in swing state Ohio. Republican Mitt Romney resumed his campaign, but with plans to turn a political rally in Ohio into a "storm relief event."

Sandy will end up causing about $20 billion in property damage and $10 billion to $30 billion more in lost business, making it one of the costliest natural disasters on record in the U.S., according to IHS Global Insight, a forecasting firm.

Lower Manhattan, which includes Wall Street, was among the hardest-hit areas after the storm sent a nearly 14-foot surge of seawater, a record, coursing over its seawalls and highways.

Water cascaded into the gaping, unfinished construction pit at the World Trade Center, and the New York Stock Exchange was closed for a second day, the first time that has happened because of weather since the Blizzard of 1888. The NYSE said it will reopen on Wednesday.

A huge fire destroyed as many as 100 houses in a flooded beachfront neighborhood in Queens on Tuesday, forcing firefighters to undertake daring rescues. Three people were injured.

New York University's Tisch Hospital evacuated 200 patients after its backup generator failed. About 20 babies from the neonatal intensive care unit were carried down staircases and were given battery-powered respirators.

A construction crane that collapsed in the high winds on Monday still dangled precariously 74 floors above the streets of midtown Manhattan, and hundreds of people were evacuated as a precaution. And on Staten Island, a tanker ship wound up beached on the shore.

Most major tunnels and bridges in New York were closed, as were schools, Broadway theaters and the metropolitan area's three main airports, LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark.

With water standing in two major commuter tunnels and seven subway tunnels under the East River, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it was unclear when the nation's largest transit system would be rolling again. It shut down Sunday night ahead of the storm.

Joseph Lhota, chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, said the damage was the worst in the 108-year history of the New York subway.

Similarly, Consolidated Edison said it could take at least a week to restore electricity to the last of the nearly 800,000 customers in and around New York City who lost power.

Millions of more fortunate New Yorkers surveyed the damage as dawn broke, their city brought to an extraordinary standstill.

"Oh, Jesus. Oh, no," Faye Schwartz said she looked over her neighborhood in Brooklyn, where cars were scattered like leaves.

Reggie Thomas, a maintenance supervisor at a prison near the overflowing Hudson River, emerged from an overnight shift, a toothbrush in his front pocket, to find his Honda with its windows down and a foot of water inside. The windows automatically go down when the car is submerged to free drivers.

"It's totaled," Thomas said with a shrug. "You would have needed a boat last night."

Around midday, Sandy was about 120 miles east of Pittsburgh, pushing westward with winds of 45 mph, and was expected to make a turn into New York State on Tuesday night. Although weakening as it goes, the storm will continue to bring heavy rain and flooding, said Daniel Brown of the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

In a measure of the storm's immense size and power, waves on southern Lake Michigan rose to a record-tying 20.3 feet. High winds spinning off Sandy's edges clobbered the Cleveland area early Tuesday, uprooting trees, cutting power to hundreds of thousands, closing schools and flooding major roads along Lake Erie.

In Portland, Maine, gusts topping 60 mph scared away several cruise ships and prompted officials to close the port.

Sandy also brought blizzard conditions to parts of West Virginia and neighboring Appalachian states, with more than 2 feet of snow expected in some places. A snowstorm in western Maryland caused a pileup of tractor-trailers that blocked part of Interstate 68 on slippery Big Savage Mountain.

"It's like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs up here," said Bill Wiltson, a Maryland State Police dispatcher.

The death toll climbed rapidly, and included 17 victims in New York State ? 10 of them in New York City ? along with five dead in Pennsylvania and five in New Jersey. Sandy also killed 69 people in the Caribbean before making its way up the Eastern Seaboard.

In New Jersey, Sandy cut off barrier islands, swept houses from their foundations and washed amusement pier rides into the ocean. It also wrecked several boardwalks up and down the coast, tearing away a section of Atlantic City's world-famous promenade. Atlantic City's 12 waterfront casinos came through largely unscathed.

Jersey City was closed to cars because traffic lights were out, and Hoboken, just over the Hudson River from Manhattan, was hit with major flooding.

A huge swell of water swept over the small New Jersey town of Moonachie, near the Hackensack River, and authorities struggled to rescue about 800 people, some living in a trailer park. And in neighboring Little Ferry, water suddenly started gushing out of storm drains overnight, submerging a road under 4 feet of water and swamping houses.

Police and fire officials used boats and trucks to reach the stranded.

"I looked out and the next thing you know, the water just came up through the grates. It came up so quickly you couldn't do anything about it. If you wanted to move your car to higher ground you didn't have enough time," said Little Ferry resident Leo Quigley, who with his wife was taken to higher ground by boat.

    checklist

As cities affected by Hurricane Sandy begin to assess the damage caused by the record-breaking storm, many of those impacted are preparing for alterations to their work schedules and environment.

Bracing for impact doesn?t have to mean reduced effectiveness, however. Below are some tips and free tools which can help keep you on track ? no matter which way the wind blows:

    Emergency Planning

Too often, we underestimate the impact of a storm, believing it will mean little more than heavy traffic and a day or two without electricity. But the human and economic tolls can be great, and preparing thoroughly for the full range of outcomes will maximize your ability to not only manage your work ? but to simply stay safe.

It goes without saying, but pay attention to preparedness and government agencies? warnings, and evacuate if, needed. Map an evacuation route (and an alternate), even if you don?t believe you?re facing immediate danger, and download free apps, such as the one provided by the American Red Cross for tracking the storm and sending emergency distress signals should you face serious danger.

    Create a Contingency Plan

Limited public transportation, downed power lines and general chaos might prevent even the hardiest amongst us from keeping to our routines and schedules. That?s why having a contingency plan (this app helps you plan a hurricane checklist) in place can help you maintain momentum in the face of disruptions ? especially since already limited resources may be increasingly strained.

Experts recommend paring down your routine to the essentials by identifying key responsibilities, projects and stakeholders. What must get done and who needs to do it? Does that creative re-design project really need to be completed ASAP ? or can it wait? List the truly critical items in order of priority, and define means for completing them outside of the traditional office environment.

Don?t forget that disruptions can last for several days ?if not weeks. A solid contingency plan should equip you and your colleagues to handle major responsibilities for an unforeseen period of time. If you?re thinking of being back in the office in a couple of days, don?t count on it ? and plan accordingly.? Roads may be impassable. Your office may be flooded or otherwise damaged. Your boss may be unreachable.

Even seemingly simple things, such as finding gasoline or even potable water can get harder as the days go by; free apps such GasBuddy can help you locate stocked gas stations in your area ?or along your evacuation route ?and find the cheapest price.

    Assess Your Alternatives

In addition to remembering to back-up key files(try the Egnyte free app) in alternate locations (such as in the cloud or remote servers), you should be aware of alternative solutions to traditional office needs. Can some workers be deployed to work from other cities? Or can some meetings be held remotely, using remote conferencing and collaboration tools?

Holding virtual meetings and collaborating remotely via tools and apps such as iMeet?(click for a free trial) can help you maintain high levels of productivity and save money in shifting work situations.

And because these are cloud-based solutions, they?re less likely to be disrupted by adverse weather in any single geographic area. It also allows you to share notes, files, and meet face to face with a variety of voice-connection options that will minimize the likelihood of disruption ?even if phone or power lines are down.

Hurricanes are intrinsically unpredictable phenomena, and can be expected to wreak havoc on work routines and normal business life. Minimize their impact through sensible planning and precautions ? and above all, stay safe.

PGi is a leader in the sorts of virtual collaboration and meeting tools, such as iMeet and GlobalMeet, which enable people to work from a variety of locations ?even in difficult weather and other unexpected situations.

The Progressive Catholic Voice: Open Letter to Archbishop ...

The Progressive Catholic Voice's sharing of your open letters to Archbishop Nienstedt continues with the following letter by Patty Thorsen, who describes herself as "a Universalist by birth, a Christian through baptism, and a practicing Catholic by way of living." To learn more about this series and how to participate in it, click here.

    Archbishop Nienstedt:

I am deeply disturbed by your appeal ? your campaign ? directed at me, fellow Catholics, and all Minnesota citizens to vote ?Yes? on the Marriage Amendment. Same-sex marriage is not an affront to the institution of marriage between a man and a woman, as your appeal implies.

Quite to the contrary. Same-sex marriage is an affirmation of the committed, loving relationships to which all individuals engaged in the institution of marriage ? homosexual and heterosexual ? are called.

Being Christian, I am ? we are ? called to live guided by three principles Christ articulated, ?faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love.? Being Catholic, I am ? we are ? called to respect life. Respect for ? respect of ? life does not begin at conception, nor does it end at death. Being Catholic, I am ? we are ? called to respect all of life ? all committed, loving relationships between conception and death.

The Catholic Church I know and love blesses ? sanctifies ? committed, loving relationships. Be it through baptism, single life, vowed life, or married life, we are called to bless the living of all vocations ? not exclusive to sexual orientation. To proclaim otherwise compromises the very integrity of all vocations.

The Catholic Church I know and love is called to live the meaning of its name, ?catholic.? The Catholic Church I know and love is called to capitalize on the meaning of its name, ?catholic? ? universal.

We are called to be a universal church ? a catholic Catholic Church ? open to every individual without regard to sexual orientation.

Through Christ, we are called to be guided by faith, hope, and love. Through Christ, we are not called to exclude any individual from fully living their vocation ? from fully expressing their love.

It is beyond my conception to understand a basic question raised by your opposition to same-sex marriage. You say that same-sex marriage is a threat to the institution of marriage between a man and a woman. It is not. But, for the sake of argument, let?s say it is. I think we can both agree, marriage between a man and a woman is an expression of committed, loving relationship.

Same-sex couples called to marriage are called by the depth of their commitment ? the depth of their love.

    Archbishop Nienstedt, enlighten me.

How is it that one couple united by their love of and commitment to one another can threaten another couple who is united by their love of and commitment to each other? How?

If same-sex marriage were to be a threat to the institution of marriage between a man and a woman, what does that say regarding the integrity of heterosexual marriage that you declare sacred through the sacrament of marriage?

    Archbishop Nienstedt, that troubles me.

I am called to vote ?No? on the Marriage Amendment. I am called to celebrate the gifts brought forth when same-sex marriages ? expressions of committed, loving relationships ? are affirmed and treasured.

I invite you to join me in celebrating the gifts of individuals who are called to same-sex marriage. We need your leadership. Join me. Join others. It is not too late to vote ?No? on the Marriage Amendment.

May the peace of Christ be with you,

    ? Patty Thorsen

    Post-Sandy home insurance tips | Bankrate.com

If you live in the northeastern quadrant of the United States, you and your homeowners insurance may already be under siege from Hurricane Sandy, a freak late-season super-storm the likes of which has rarely been seen in these parts.

Naturally, safety is the top priority whenever nature threatens. But once Sandy moves on, a few tips regarding the homeowners insurance claims process can save you needless days of post-hurricane rage, confusion -- and possibly additional financial loss.

Lynne McChristian of the Insurance Information Institute, or III, says customer frustration often starts with that first phone call.

"You know when people call and are placed on hold, where it says your call will be handled in the order received? Claims aren't processed that way in a catastrophic event," she explains.

"When there is a catastrophic event, claims are handled by the severity of damage, meaning those with the most severe damage are seen first, not by how soon you call in," she says. "Those with the most severe damage are the most in need to see somebody promptly and get back on their feet. When there's an event where there are hundreds or thousands of claims, you give priority to those people."

Why is your adjuster taking so long to show up? It may not be by choice.

"They are not allowed to go in until emergency management and government officials tell them that it's safe to do so," McChristian says. "The insurance companies are already stationed as close as they can safely be to where they expect the damage to be. All the insurers are poised to go in to wherever they need to be."

Once you are out of the storm, here's the safest -- and least costly -- route to recovery, according to III and the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America.

    1. Safety first. Avoid life-threatening safety hazards. If you lost power, do not attempt to turn on lights until you are sure it's safe to do so. Avoid wires and outlets, and, if possible, turn off your main breaker switch with a piece of wood or heavy rubber. If you smell gas, turn off the main line, open windows, or evacuate. If your car has been submerged, let it dry thoroughly before attempting to start it.

    2. Make an inventory. Before you start the cleanup process, list the damage to your home and document it with video or photos. Save remnants of damaged or destroyed property for your insurance adjuster.

    3. Make "reasonable" repairs. "If a window blew out, you want to take reasonable steps to protect that window and your possessions from further damage, so it's important to take those steps so the damage doesn't increase," McChristian says. "Be sure to save the receipts for any temporary repairs because that is part of the insurance settlement, and you can get reimbursed for those repairs. The key word is 'reasonable.'"

    4. Filing a claim. Contact your insurance agent or company hotline to expedite your homeowners insurance claim. Keep a record of everyone you talk to about your claim, including dates and details of your conversation.

    5. Avoid "storm chasers." When disasters strike, unscrupulous, unlicensed contractors and outright con artists swoop in to bilk money from the gullible. "Beware of storm chasers," says McChristian. "Use your insurance company. You're not alone; you have an insurance company who really has your back in these situations, and many times they have approved contractors they can hook you up with who understand the insurance repair business and go through the process correctly."

No early withdrawal tax penalty on 401(k) for retiree ? Business ...

    Q. I am age 57 and plan to retire this year. Do I have to wait 2? years to take 401(k) withdrawals? L.T., Little Egg Harbor, N.J.

    A. No. The general rule says you must pay a 10% tax penalty, in addition to regular income tax, if you take the money before age 59?. However, there are several exceptions to the 10% penalty, including one for withdrawals taken by someone who ?separates from service? and is at least 55 years old (as opposed to 59?). You apparently qualify for the age-55 exception.

Note: The age-55 exception to the 10% penalty is not available for early IRA withdrawals (before age 59?).

    • is uncomfortable or afraid to go for counseling.

Don?t despair! Internationally renowned marriage therapist Michele Weiner-Davis assures ?You can affect relationship change single-handedly.?

Marriage counseling with one person not only can work, but also often is more effective than having both spouses present. A counselor trained in helping relationships heal knows how to ask questions to bring out both his and her sides of the story and teach effective tools the spouse attending counseling can successfully use to mend hurting relationships.

So seek out a counselor trained to work successfully to help your relationship with one or both spouses present. Invite your spouse to attend counseling with you. If he/she says ?no,? stop yourself from forcing the issue and accept the answer gracefully. This alone can move your relationship in the right direction.

    Methodological pluralism ? media/anthropology

by Geoff Payne via The SAGE Dictionary of Social Research Methods (2006)

    Print pages: 174-176

    Definition

An approach that advocates flexibility in the selection of social research methods, based on the principle of choosing the most suitable methods for the nature of the problem being researched. More generally, methodological pluralism calls on the researcher to be tolerant of other people?s preferred methods even when they differ from one?s own.

    Distinctive Features

From time to time, disagreements among social scientists about which are the ?best? social research methods become more vocal and indeed, confrontational. An example of this is the competition between older, ethnographic research styles associated with sociologists at the University of Chicago, and the (then newer) work based on social surveys being promoted by Harvard and Columbia after World War II. In the UK a conflict between quantitative methods and several newer forms of qualitative research took place during the 1970s. These disputes are usually marked by antagonistic criticisms of published work, lengthy expositions in defence of particular methods, and even personal abuse.

Methodological pluralism, promoted by Bell and Newby (1977), rejected the idea that one type of methods was automatically better than another. They argued that it was healthy for sociology to contain a number of different theoretical perspectives, and that while each perspective tended to imply a given method of research, each new research project should be tackled on the basis of its own particular features. The research methods selected for the project should be the ones that best fitted the characteristics of the phenomena being studied.

For example, studies of the national rates at which something was occurring, or projects dealing with simpler concepts that could be relatively easily measured, were better suited to social surveys, pre-coded questionnaires and other quantitative methods. On the other hand, when more detail was required, or phenomena were complex, subtle, or unclear, this was more suited to research by observation, less structured interviews, ethnographic description and other qualitative styles. Not every researcher would use every style of research during their careers, nor should they be proficient in all research methods. The plurality would be achieved in the total research output of the discipline as a whole (Bell and Roberts, 1984).

    Evaluation

Despite the common sense of methodological pluralism, more sociologists pay lip-service to it than actively adopt it as a philosophy. The main reason is that during their education and early careers, each researcher acquires a set of personal preferences for one type of social science over others. This is not just a question of technical skills, but rather an interest in certain topics and a philosophical view of the social world and how it can be analysed.

There are genuine differences between schools of research, from those seeking to involve and empower the people being researched, through to those that regard ?respondents? merely as sources of information, and from those that see the social world as intricately interconnected and difficult to ?know?, to those that concentrate on the generality of patterned associations between small sets of ?variables?. While not always consciously returning to the complex social theories that underlie their positions, researchers read mainly a sub-set of the literature written by like-minded colleagues, defining research problems in specific ways, and therefore carry out their research using a narrow repertoire of methods.

In some cases, this results only in a rather focused approach, without much concern for other approaches. In others, the intellectual context of the research is strongly associated with a particular method: the context defines what is worth researching, how it should be researched and what order of interpretations can be made. In its more extreme form this results in ritualized denunciation of alternatives often becoming a part of publication. Where some researchers adhere to a ?standpoint? position, their intention is an explicitly ideological one which goes beyond just making new discoveries, to the promotion of the interests of one particular group. Challenging other researchers? methods is one way of undermining the position of rival interest groups (Payne and Payne, 2004: 89-93, 152-7).

Such out-of-hand dismissal because of the type of methods a study has used is a different matter from legitimately debating the competency of its research basis, when that is part of a general evaluation. However, it would be wrong to portray academic life as consisting solely of calm, rational, philosophical debate. Academics also compete for resources (research funding, access to journals, tenured posts, career promotion) in just as determined a way as do people in other walks of life. Attacking the type of research methods used by rivals is one weapon in the struggle between individuals, and institutions, for supremacy.

Not surprisingly, methodological pluralism?s failure to recognize these processes has meant that its call for toleration has largely gone unheeded. For example, in the UK the sociology that has been published in recent years has depended heavily on a narrow range of qualitative methods. A recent study of journal papers found only a minority using quantitative methods: only 2.6 per cent ?involved bivariate analysis and were written by sociologists at British universities, and only 8 (3.5%) involved multivariate techniques ? This can hardly be described as methodological pluralism? (Payne et al., 2004: 160).

I told you so | An Epidemic of Addiction

The FDA recently released a Drug Safety Announcement regarding the use of codeine in young children after tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy surgery for obstructive sleep apnea.? I was somewhat surprised to see a safety announcement on a medication that has been in use for decades, but the release underscores our improved knowledge of drug metabolism, and the broadening demographics of the United States.

Codeine has little activity at opioid receptors.? The analgesic effects of codeine are actually caused by morphine, after the conversion of codeine to morphine at the liver.? The conversion is catalyzed by an enzyme called CYP2D6, part of the cytochrome system of enzymes that are involved in the breakdown of a number of compounds.

I have written about the addictiveness of narcotic pain medications.? People addicted to opioids often go to significant lengths to obtain prescriptions for narcotic pain relievers from healthcare practitioners.? Emergency room physicians and nurses become aware of the efforts of ?narcotic-seekers?, which range from faking pain symptoms or dental injuries to self-catheterization and instilling blood into the bladder to fake kidney stones.? Distinguishing those with real pain from those who are addicted and not experiencing pain is a serious situation, but doctors roll their eyes at some of the more-typical presentations.? One such situation is the patient who reports an ?allergy? to all of the weaker narcotics, and claims that ?the only drug that works is (insert Dilaudid, morphine, oxycodone, or another potent opioid here).

Codeine is one drug that is commonly rejected as ?ineffective? as part of a request for something stronger.? When I was a medical student, we assumed that requests for something other than codeine were disingenuous.? But at some point, maybe 15 years ago, I remember reading an article that described the conversion of codeine to morphine by the liver.? The article reported that the enzyme that performs the conversion exists in varying forms across the population, with some ethnic groups having more active forms of the enzyme than others.? Some people have very low levels of CYP2D6, and therefore get very little analgesia from codeine.? In other words, some of the people who claimed that ?codeine never works for me? were probably less disingenuous than doctors thought!

The latest FDA warning describes three deaths in children between the ages of 2 and 5.? The effected children were ?ultra-rapid CYP2D6 metabolizers? who were given typical doses of codeine for post-operative pain control, who converted the codeine to morphine more efficiently than expected.? The respiratory depressant effects of morphine, combined with some degree of post-operative respiratory obstruction, caused the death of those children and the near-death of a fourth.

About 6% of the people in the US are ultra-rapid metabolizers.? About the same number are poor metabolizers and have a reduced analgesic response to codeine.? In some ethnic groups there are greater numbers of rapid metabolizers, particularly people from Greek or African/Ethiopian ancestry.? If you are someone who gets little pain relief from codeine or on the other hand if you get a very strong effect from codeine, you may want to look into G6PD testing, which can be ordered by physicians.? The enzyme activity is heritable to some extent, so your own enzyme activity may bear relevance to the activity of the enzyme in your children.

Expect similar issues to arise with other medications, as we learn more and more about how our bodies metabolize medications, and about the effects of those metabolites on enzyme systems.? The lesson also reminds doctors that there is wisdom to be gained by listening to our patients.

Straumann to cut jobs as Europe sales slow

ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss dental implant maker Straumann said it would axe roughly 150 jobs to boost margins as it grapples with sluggish demand in Europe, its biggest market.

The euro zone debt crisis has battered sales of dental implants made by Straumann and its Swiss rival Nobel Biocare as cash-strapped Europeans, worried about the downturn, cut back on non-essential dental treatment.

Chief Executive Beat Spalinger said the company had decided to slash 150 jobs by the start of 2013 - roughly 6 percent of its global workforce - after operating margins fell below 15 percent in the first half of the year, a level he deemed "unacceptable".

The axe will fall on jobs at Straumann's headquarters in Basel as well as sales subsidiaries around the world while manufacturing will be spared, Spalinger said.

Third-quarter sales rose 4 percent to 156.8 million Swiss francs ($167.41 million), compared with an average estimate in a Reuters poll of 158 million.

The company said the cost cuts would improve annual operating profit by 35-40 million francs by 2014. It plans to book an exceptional charge of 15-20 million francs in 2012.

Sarasin analyst David Kaegi said investors would welcome the bigger-than-expected cost cuts, but cautioned there appeared no end in sight to the current slump in the dental market.

By 0811 GMT, Straumann's shares, which have shed almost 28 percent so far this year, were trading up 6.1 percent at 124.10 francs, outperforming a flat European healthcare sector index <.sxdp>.

Straumann, which makes more than half of its revenue in Europe, said sales in the region fell 2.5 percent in the third quarter to 82.3 million francs, hampered by austerity measures that weakened consumer confidence further.

In the worst affected markets of Spain and Italy, Spalinger said he did not expect any improvement in the near future.

The European sales decline was partly offset by North America and Asia Pacific where sales leapt 19 percent and 6 percent respectively buoyed by favourable currency effects.

Straumann also said it would increase its stake in Dental Wings, a maker of dental software and scanners, to 45 percent from 30 percent for an undisclosed sum. The move is part of a trend towards digital dentistry to optimise production.

The company confirmed its outlook for full-year sales to be at least in line with 2011 and for growth in the global tooth replacement market to remain flat at best over the full year.

Counseling of Anxiety | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets, Workouts ...

With the emergence of high tech bio-monitoring devices the exact underlying cause for anxiety, social anxiety, separation anxiety, panic attacks and anxiety related issues can now be determined and eliminated. Coupled with a faith based, values centered, approach anxiety resolves quickly resulting in a remarkably fast recovery for this condition.

The good news is this, ?real, lasting, help is now available for this condition which was once thought to be untreatable without heavy dosing of psychotropic medications?.

If you have anxiety or know someone who has anxiety, you already know from past experience the ?traditional? methods only partly help. This is because they are usually unsuccessful in determining anxiety?s cause. Why not call today and learn about what can be done to bring about a lasting solution for this debilitating condition.

    Symptoms
Anxiety can be accompanied by physical effects such as heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches, or headaches. Physically, the body prepares the organism to deal with a threat. Blood pressure and heart rate are increased, sweating is increased, bloodflow to the major muscle groups is increased, and immune and digestive system functions are inhibited (the fight or flight response). External signs of anxiety may include pale skin, sweating, trembling, and pupillary dilation. Someone suffering from anxiety might also experience it as a sense of dread or panic.

Although panic attacks are not experienced by every anxiety sufferer, they are a common symptom. Panic attacks usually come without warning, and although the fear is generally irrational, the perception of danger is very real. A person experiencing a panic attack will often feel as if he or she is about to die or pass out. Panic attacks may be confused with heart attack.

MTB Trail network at Dewey grows (NY)

    Postby mtbgreg1 ? Mon Oct 29, 2012 2:48 pm

Town of Harrietstown officials got an update Thursday on the ongoing construction of a network of mountain biking trails at the town-owned Dewey Mountain Recreation Area.

"The good news is we've built a lot of trail," Chris Gosling of the Barkeater Trails Alliance, or BETA, told the town board. "We've had a lot of great volunteer work days, and we've had a great season."

Gosling gave the board a color-coded map that showed the trails that have already been built, ones that are currently being developed and trails planned in the future. BETA member Leigh Walrath said there are now about 5 miles of mountain biking trails at Dewey, with plans to hopefully build another 2 to 3 miles.

Gosling said he's already seeing signs that Dewey is becoming a popular mountain biking spot.

    Broncos about get really hot

New Orleans Saints v Denver BroncosGetty Images

His arm might not be full strength yet.

And then he whacked his right thumb on a helmet just before halftime, leaving a small trail of blood on his throwing hand.

Boy, if Peyton Manning ever gets well, some people are going to be in trouble.

Manning was a sharp 22-of-30 for 305 yards and three touchdowns in the Broncos? 34-14 win over the Saints Sunday night. It was the best indication to date he?s all the quarterback the Broncos need to be contenders if not the favorites in the AFC. (Watch highlights here.)

With an offense that?s beginning to click and a schedule that softens as it goes, the Broncos are in excellent position to make a run.

That he doesn?t look like the Manning of five years ago with the Colts matters not at all. He?s looking comfortable running this offense, which is the important one at the moment, as no one in the AFC looks any better than the Broncos looked dismantling the Saints.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

    1. Putting Chase Daniel in a Drew Brees outfit for Halloween was a bad idea for the Saints.

Oh, wait, that was really Brees?

Anyone who thinks the Saints star quarterback doesn?t miss Sean Payton this year is kidding themselves.

Brees completed just 22-of-42 passes for 213 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and the Saints offense lacked any degree of flow whatsoever.

They?ve got an odd lot of running backs they can?t seem to figure out how to maximize, but they?ve always been able to pass around that. Even with tight end Jimmy Graham back on the field, they looked disjointed.

Sure sign of ridiculousness: The Saints were well under 5.0 yards per pass attempt for the pertinent part of the evening, and part of that is on Brees himself.

Payton may not have been able to have the Saints 5-2 instead of their current 2-5, but he?d make a significant difference in the way they?re playing, and would have Brees looking more like Brees.

    2. It?s easy, and appropriate, to spend a lot of time on Manning when the Broncos are on.

But running back Willis McGahee remains the engine of that offense.

As long as John Fox is the coach (and the underappreciated Mike McCoy the offensive coordinator), they?re never going to get too far from the run game. And though it?s easy to overlook, the Broncos called 38 run plays and 30 passes when Manning was on the field Sunday, which is not accidental.

They want to incorporate Ronnie Hillman into things, to take advantage of his explosive speed. But McGahee (23 carries for 122 yards) is still getting it done at a high level.

    3. The Saints got an emotional boost from the return of linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

And though he moved back into the starting lineup Sunday night, one thing that was growing more and more evident last year was that Vilma?s play was dropping off.

Acquiring Curtis Lofton was not unrelated to the bounty related uncertainty over Vilma?s future, but it was also a reflection of Vilma?s declining play.

There were moments against the Broncos when Vilma looked out of place, and while he?s coming in cold, and changing positions, the reality is he?s not an impact player anymore.

    4. With the way things went down in Jacksonville, I?m not sure Jack Del Rio will get a head coaching gig again soon.

But as a defensive coordinator, he and Fox work very well together. In Carolina in 2002, they helped create a six-game bounce in one season by playing dominant defense.

    They?re approaching that now.

The Broncos have an interesting group of players on that side, and Del Rio was willing to move his personnel around, putting Von Miller in spots he hadn?t been to create pressure.

Along with the improved Wesley Woodyard, they?re getting better-than-expected play from their front seven, and Del Rio has a hand in that by putting them in the right places.

    5. The Saints lack the personnel up front to play defense the way defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo wants to play.

But while the talent on the edges is deficient, the Saints appear to have at least one promising interior player on their hands in rookie defensive tackle Akiem Hicks.

The third-rounder from Canada?s University of Regina has the kind of strength and burst the Saints were lacking inside.

If you can push the pocket from the middle, that?s the shortest distance between two points, and it also makes it easier for ordinary players on the edges.

CREE Brings Wood and Concrete Hybrid Construction To North ...

    ? CREE

We have a lot of wood in North America that has to be chopped down now, thanks to the mountain pine beetle that is killing huge swathes of North American forests. It is a good reason to look at how we can substitute wood for steel and concrete in construction, to help use it up before it rots. CREE, (short for Creative Resource & Energy Efficiency) is an Austrian contractor that has developed an interesting hybrid prefabricated construction system that uses glue-laminated timber and concrete. They've built an eight storey building in Austria, LCT1, that demonstrates the system, and just in time for Greenbuild, they are bringing their system to America.

Glue-laminate timber, or Glulam, has been around for a while; it was first patented in Germany in 1872. In 1942 waterproof phenol-resorcinol adhesives were introduced and the use of the material became widespread. One of the biggest structures using was the Richmond Oval built for the 2010 Winter Olympics, covered in TreeHugger here.

    ? CREE

The CREE system uses it as as a structural frame with concrete as the decking, and is described in more detail in a press release:

The wall facades are made from glue-laminate posts, while the floor slabs are constructed from a hybrid of glue-laminate posts and concrete. While these components are manufactured off-site, the foundation of a building is laid and the structural elevator shaft core is erected. This core, made out of either steel and concrete or wood, stiffens the building and provides a frame from which the walls and floors can hang. The slabs and posts are assembled by interconnecting the preset pins and holes of the components. With this skeleton structure, architects can design a wide variety of layouts and exterior skins, to create dramatic and sustainable buildings.

    ? CREE

The prototype LCT1 building in Dornbirn, Austria, designed by Hermann Kaufmann, is built to Passivhaus standards, with triple glazed windows and a heat recovery ventilation system controlled by CO2 measurement (this is a tight building, it could build up in there). The exterior is made from recycled metal, the interior is exposed wood. It was built in eight days.

    ? CREE

CREE claims that the technology " can generate up to 90% less carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional steel/concrete construction." They have adapted it to meet local fire and seismic requirements.

    ? CREE

We have a huge problem in our forests; if we don't chop the beetle infested wood down and use it, then it will rot in place, releasing all that CO2 that was absorbed in its growth. Building out of wood could use a lot of it up, sequestering that CO2 for the life of the building. CREE technology is a step in the right direction.
