According to the Data Protection Act, there are eight principles in place to regulate how information can and can?t be obtained legally. In theory, anyone found to be in contravention of these principles has acted illegally and is open to prosecution. It is sometimes very hard to?distinguish exactly how a rule has been broken, let alone bring about any kind?of prosecution.
How to stay safe online
The principles exist however, and they are there for your safety. Now that you?know what other companies and individuals can legally do, it does make it?easier for you to protect yourself, especially if you are a small business. One?key thing you need to do is protect yourself from spam and junk mail, and?there are a number of ways of doing this effectively.
Firstly, use alias emails that can easily be replaced or discarded should they?come under attack from spam. Use these alternate addresses when operating?in the public sphere of the online world, such as on forums or message?boards. The less you use your actual address, the less likely you are to be a?victim of spam or online fraud. It also goes without saying that you should only?give out your address when you are sure it is safe to do so.
One of the methods in which you can further stay safe online is to make?sure you only buy from recognised safe websites and urls. For example,?most website urls begin with HTTP, the code used to transfer data. This?isn't secure; use websites with HTTPS, a secure version of the code which?prevents people from retrieving the information as its being sent.
Use the tools at your disposal
Ignore spam that does get through. Any attempt to reply or unsubscribe could?verify your address with the spammer and lead to further problems. Similarly,?try to avoid replying to long chain emails, as these are easy targets for the?spammers and very rich in information.
Ultimately, you can be as careful as you like but sometimes the spammers?will just get to you. So, it is always a good idea to use spam filters and other?online data protection tools to keep your information safe. Modern anti-spam?tools are very effective and could keep your business safe from online threats.
